parkersburg west virginiaAmity Treatment Center Review

As a part of Westbrook Health Services, Amity Treatment Center provides adult residential treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in Parkersburg, West Virginia. This short-term program helps clients get sober using the 12 steps and evidence-based therapy. Although the average stay is 21 to 28 days, clients’ schedules during that time are filled with therapy and meetings.

Accommodations and Food

The facility holds up to 15 residents at a time. There are single, double and triple rooms available, all assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Clients also have access to a common area with a television, therapy rooms, a dining hall and a small on-site gym. Smoking is permitted outside of the building.

Three meals per day are provided. Food is cooked and served on-site creating a communal atmosphere among the group. Dietary requests can usually be accommodated and caffeine is permitted in the mornings.

Treatment and Staff

Amity Treatment Center offers residential treatment for adult men and women. The program is short but intensive, immersing clients in the 12 steps and therapy. While detox is no longer offered, recommendations to outside facilities can be made upon request.

The schedule entails one individual therapy session per week in conjunction with daily group therapy. Group topics include relapse prevention, substance abuse education, anger management, coping skills, self-esteem, parenting and an introduction to the 12 steps. Therapeutic techniques such as CBT and DBT are used frequently, as are educational concepts about addiction. Clients learn about the addiction cycle, the addiction as a disease model, the stages of recovery and the effects of prolonged substance abuse.

Clients must attend on-site AA/NA meetings daily, with an opportunity to attend off-site meetings on Tuesdays and Sundays. For those struggling with mental health issues, there is a psychiatrist available for medication management. Family involvement is highly encouraged as well; to that end, a family group is offered on Saturday where communication, boundaries and codependency can be discussed.

Prior to being released from residential, clients and their counselor come up with an appropriate aftercare plan. This may involve an outpatient program, such as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) through Westbrook or a sober living program. The staff consists of LADCs, nurses, psychiatrists and physicians.

Extras

Westbrook Health Services offers an array of outpatient services, as well as a weekly medication assisted recovery group, an IOP for gambling addiction, gender-specific anger management group therapy, DUI groups, crisis stabilization, drug and urine screens, group therapy for PTSD, parenting classes and a employee assistance program. There is also The Genesis Program for Women which offers gender-specific sober living.

In Summary

Amity Treatment Center is essentially a no-frills residential experience for those suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues. While the facility is basic, the program incorporates both 12-step philosophies and support for co-occurring issues like depression. For those in the area, this program is a good starting point for a life of sobriety.
