AMHA Medical Group, Inc. was founded by Dr. James Pratty and “is built on a foundation of unconditional positive regard for the people we serve.” The office offers psychiatric treatment for a variety of mental health diagnoses and substance use disorders, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone for opioid addiction.
Dr. Pratty opened AMHA in 1987. Previously, he was the Chief Resident at Harbor-UCLA with a specialty in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. He also had sub-specialties in Treatment Resistant Depression and Psychiatric Utilization Review. Dr. Pratty is board certified in addiction medicine. He and his AMHA colleagues have participated in multiple mental health and substance use clinical trials and he has held directorships and consulted with numerous healthcare organizations in southern California. AMHA’s office is located in Torrance, an industrial city south of Los Angeles, a short drive from Orange County.
Treatment and Staff
AMHA’s treatment team includes nurses, psychiatrists and affiliated psychologists and LCSWs. Currently, the practice group focuses on providing psychiatric medication services to clients receiving additional therapy at outside offices.
The office also has a well-established protocol for MAT with Suboxone. New clients participate in a four-day titration period in which they detox under supervision by the nursing staff at the AMHA offices. At the end of the four-day period, they receive an initial dose for one month. After, they are required to have monthly check-ins at the office to discuss their goals and progress. After, their monthly dose may be adjusted.
Clients attend the monthly consults as long as they choose to remain in MAT. Should they desire to taper off Suboxone, Dr. Pratty and his team with create a tapering plan. The treatment team at AMHA is also able to provide referrals for treatment programs, therapists and local peer support meetings (such as 12-step or SMART Recovery) if the client desires greater support.

AMHA also provides consults that focus on dementia treatment and healing the parent-adolescent relationship.
