Amethyst, Inc.Amethyst, Inc. Review

Amethyst, Inc. was founded in 1984 by a community of women in recovery to provide housing for all women recovering from addiction in need of long-term housing which included space for their children. The organization has grown exponentially since it was founded and now provides long-term outpatient alcohol and drug treatment as well as supportive housing and employment placement for homeless women and their families. Amethyst holds certifications from the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) and CARF.

Treatment and Staff

Amethyst’s Safety, Treatment and Recovery program (STAR) is free treatment which includes individual and group therapy, psychoeducational classes, trauma therapy and aftercare services. To start the program, each client must schedule an assessment between 9 and 11 am weekly. During this phase, each potential client meets with a counselor to discuss their history, current status and what they hope to achieve through the STAR program.

The STAR program lasts for six months with group therapy twice per week for two hours each session. One-on-one therapy is scheduled on an individual basis depending on each client’s needs. Referrals are available for other programs and treatment (e.g. residential programs, detox) as well as help finding employment. 12 step meetings are required several times a week as part of treatment. The counselors at STAR include Master’s-level therapists and LSWs.

Amethyst’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) lasts anywhere between one and five years. IOP clients attend psychoeducational classes, individual therapy and group therapy all day Monday through Friday. Those enrolled in IOP are welcome to stay in Amethyst housing—apartments with a curfew and an on-site manager who checks in on the women after hours. There is no smoking allowed in the apartments (or at all while enrolled in the IOP) and to help those struggling with nicotine addiction, Amethyst offers smoking cessation services. IOP clients also get intensive case management and leave the program only when they and their appointed counselor agree.

Extras

Amethyst, Inc. maintains over 100 fully furnished housing units throughout Columbus, Ohio as safe, sober communities for women in recover and their children. Each unit provides a live-in resident manager to provide support whenever necessary. These units are meant to serve as permanent supportive housing for homeless women with income below the poverty line and their dependent children and as such, women are welcome to stay long-term, with an average length of stay of around 23 months.

During the summer, Amethyst holds a day camp called Summer Quest for children between the ages of five and 17 whose mothers are IOP clients. Just like any other day camp, the kids play and engage in daily scheduled activities, games, adventures and field trips. The day camp also gives the children the unique opportunity to bond with other young people going through similar experiences. Mothers in the IOP may participate with their children in some camp activities as well, strengthening family ties.
