Amethyst, Inc. Review
Amethyst, Inc. was founded in 1984 by a community of women in recovery to provide housing for all women recovering from addiction in need of long-term housing which included space for their children. The organization has grown exponentially since it was founded and now provides long-term outpatient alcohol and drug treatment as well as supportive housing and employment placement for homeless women and their families. Treatment and Staff
Amethyst’s Safety, Treatment and Recovery program (STAR) is free treatment which includes individual and group therapy, psychoeducational classes, trauma therapy and aftercare services. To start the program, each client must schedule an assessment between 9 and 11 am weekly. During this phase, each potential client meets with a counselor to discuss their history, current status and what they hope to achieve through the STAR program.
The STAR program lasts for six months with group therapy twice per week for two hours each session. One-on-one therapy is scheduled on an individual basis depending on each client’s needs. Referrals are available for other programs and treatment (e.g. residential programs, detox) as well as help finding employment. 12 step meetings are required several times a week as part of treatment. The counselors at STAR include Master’s-level therapists and LSWs.
