American Health Services: El Dorado Community Service Centers Review
American Health Services is the umbrella healthcare network that operates El Dorado Community Service Centers—a network of facilities offering mental health and outpatient substance abuse treatment. There are 19 outpatient facilities in the state of California—as far north as San Francisco and as far south as San Diego. Additionally AHS has three facilities in Texas—in Brownsville, Houston and Pharr.
AHS treatment tracks include medication-assisted detox and an Outpatient Drug-Free program (ODF). Both individual and group counseling are integral methods of recovery at AHS, but treatment is not 12-step oriented.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients make appointments at a chosen clinic for a physical with a staff physician and an thorough assessment to determine the extent of their substance use and the current state of their mental, emotional, psychological and behavioral health. Clients requiring detox are enrolled in the 21-day NRT program which provides medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol dependence. Medical doctors treat clients with Subutex and Suboxone.
ODF treatment includes crisis intervention and both group and individual counseling using evidence-based treatment including CBT and DBT. Clients meet at least once a week for individual sessions with their assigned counselor for the duration of treatment. Group sessions take place a minimum of four times a week, are led by one or two counselors and group size is between four and 10 clients. Therapy aims to help clients embrace behavioral changes, identify and manage psychosocial stressors and live a life free of the negative aspects of substance abuse. Staff includes licensed therapists and physicians.
Extras
AHS facilities also offer Narcotic Replacement Therapy (NRT) as an intensive detox using methadone maintenance. This program also incorporates group and individual counseling.
The Marysville, CA AHS facility will begin to provide transportation for clients to and from outlying areas of Northern California including rural towns such as Grass Valley, Nevada City, Oroville and Palarmo and eventually Lincoln, Live Oak and Biggs as the program expands.
In Summary
The unique outpatient treatment program at AHS El Dorado Community Service Centers is focused and comprehensive. The continuity and quality of care is consistent across their vast network of facilities. Clients who prefer to work a 12-step program rather than AHS’ own version of evidence-based practices will need to look elsewhere for treatment.
