Alternatives Counseling Review
With locations in Southampton and Riverhead, New York, Alternatives Counseling is a community-oriented non-profit providing outpatient-based treatment to low-income clients in recovery from addiction. Founded in 1969, the organization provides both prevention and primary care services to adolescents, adults and families.
Treatment and Staff
While inpatient detox services are not available, Alternatives can facilitate Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to individuals withdrawing from opiate-based drugs. Those in need of more extensive services can be referred to nearby facilities.
Frequency and intensity of therapy varies depending on each client’s schedule but all programming includes both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. While basic support for co-occurring disorders like depression and anxiety may be available, those in need of extensive support may need to seek help elsewhere. All clients are required to attend 12-step meetings in addition to therapy. Group sessions incorporate life skills, relapse prevention, addiction education and family therapy.
Alternatives’ staff boasts MDs, LCSWs, LMSWs, CASACs, LPNs, RNs and Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
The organization provides specialized outpatient programs for women, Spanish-speaking clients and young adults. Though the methods used are largely the same, each is more directly catered to the needs of those respective populations. Programs for drivers with DUI/DWIs are also available.
