AltaPointe Health Systems oversees a community-based, regional system of mental health, substance abuse and developmental disability services in southern Alabama. Established in 1957 as the Mobile Mental Health Center, the organization now known as AltaPointe Health Systems operates 15 clinical facilities and dozens of group homes. The West Mobile office provides several free or low cost outpatient substance abuse treatment options for adults.
Treatment and Staff
AltaPointe Health Systems serves a variety of different adult populations with substance abuse treatment that is not 12-step based. The length of its programs varies depending on the needs of the individual.
The Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) option is an outpatient methadone or suboxone maintenance program designed for opiate addicts. Clients receive daily doses under very strict medical supervision. Staff members assess each client to determine which type of additional counseling they need. These services include CBT, behavior modification, skills training and relapse prevention. The treatment team, directed by a physician, regularly evaluates each client and may allow clients to take their medication home if they have consistently provided a drug-free urinalysis and complied with all other treatment requirements.
AltaPointe Health Systems also offers a specialized women’s program designed for pregnant clients and women with young children. This is a 90-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that meets nine hours a week and offers therapeutic services including group therapy, CBT, systemic therapy, behavior modification, skills training, parenting classes and relapse prevention. A unique feature of the program is that it provides transportation and childcare, serving up to 60 families within Mobile and Washington counties.
The adult and co-occurring IOP treatment programs are for adults 19 years and up and consist of group and individual therapy sessions. These programs typically occur five days a week for roughly four hours at a time. Additionally offered for adults is the PATH program, which provides services to those with mental illness and co-occurring disorders who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless.
AltaPointe Health Systems’ staff includes 18 on-staff psychiatrists, 16 psychiatric residents, and 350 licensed and certified professionals including counselors.
A young adult program, aimed at children who have grown up in the foster care system, offers a path to healthy, independent living for those aged 16 to 21. Clients, who are housed in a 10-bed residence, take part in school, work, recreational and community activities.
AltaPointe Health Systems offers a variety of affordable outpatient options for those seeking recovery in Mobile and Washington counties. A few outstanding features, like take-home medication for the opiate treatment program, daycare for the women’s program and free transportation, set the organization apart among state-funded mental health services. Their programs promote sobriety and basic mental health, providing care focused on individual needs.
