Treatment and Staff
Many clients come to the outpatient program at Alta Bates after going through inpatient treatment, though some come from other facilities or directly into this program after the assessment determines it would be a good fit. To begin in any of the outpatient programs it’s required that the client be clean for at least five days and consent to weekly drug tests. The most intensive program is the PHP, which runs Mondays through Saturdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm for four weeks, and includes an afternoon meal. The IOP also runs six days a week, but for three hours in the morning for four weeks, and the evening IOP program runs three days a week for eight weeks. The IOP programs do not include any meals.
Outpatient programs are a combination of group therapy, psychoeducation classes, lectures, nutrition classes and training on relaxation techniques. Topics include relapse prevention and coping skills, along with an introduction to the concepts of AA and NA. Therapy methods include CBT, DBT and EMDR. There are also on site 12-step meetings and resources for clients to build a peer support community and sponsor during the outpatient programs. There are also weekly individual therapy sessions and aftercare planning.
These programs all begin with an examination by a physician and dual diagnosis assessment, which can lead to medication management if necessary. There is a large staff of medical professionals in the substance abuse program at Alta Bates that offer extensive knowledge on the topic of addiction. They include Master’s-level therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and physicians.
Family involvement is an important element to the client’s success at Alta Bates and there is a family program offered twice a week in the evenings. There are also yearlong aftercare and alumni programs. Graduates of the MPI Chemical Dependency Treatment Services programs also have access to an alumni Facebook group.
The MPI Chemical Dependency Treatment Services outpatient program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center facility offers wrap-around services and long term continuing care treatment that many hospitals don’t offer. Integrating education along with medical and therapeutic programs in a caring environment provides the tools necessary for success after the client leaves the safety and routine of rehab.
