With many locations throughout the East Bay (in Berkeley, Lafayette and Oakland) near San Francisco, California, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, a subsidiary of Sutter Health, is an expansive organization with many different available primary health care options. While the majority of the facility’s programs offer services such as heart, cancer and bone and joint care, the organization also provides flexible services for mental health issues. Among them are flexible options for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral issues, including outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the medical and psychiatric staff determine their needs and learn their medical history. Because Alta Bates Summit Medical is a fully-equipped medical facility, those in need of stabilization or detox services can do so on-site before continuing on to treatment. While follow-up or aftercare-related outpatient services may also be available (and are more flexible), the organization’s main option is its IOP. Programs are available for adults and adolescents alike.
While each program is individualized, IOP typically begins around 8:30 am with a supervised meal, a check-in and groups and therapy until 3:30 pm. In the middle of this process are also a lunch break and time for snacks. Process groups work on rotating topics which may vary by client, though each program includes both group and individual therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT.
Alta Bates Medical Center’s curriculum also uses holistic and experiential methods including movement therapy, mindfulness training, art therapy and drama therapy as applicable. Educational groups focus on life skills, stress management, emotional processing, relapse prevention, nutritional education and more. As a medical and psychiatric program, dual diagnosis support and medication management services are available as well. Clients also attend on-site 12-step recovery meetings.
The staff at Alta Bates Summit Medical is wide-ranging, and includes physicians, psychiatrists, RNs, LCSWs, CEDSs, case managers, dietitians, nutritionists, chaplains and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.
As mentioned above, those who complete a more intensive IOP can also work with staff to develop discharge and aftercare plans, which include help with meal planning and dietary needs. Because Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is a much broader organization as well, other primary health care services are also available on-site as needed. Those in need of longer-term or more intensive care can also attend inpatient treatment as well.
In all, the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center provides multi-faceted outpatient treatment programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring issues. Programs are individualized and feature medical and psychiatric oversight. Treatment includes evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT as well as holistic methods and nutritional education. While the cost of these plans may vary by the strength of each client’s insurance, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s outpatient eating disorder treatment remains a resource worth considering.
