Alsana: Westlake Village Review
Located in the Southern California community of Westlake Village, Alsana is a comprehensive eating disorder and co-occurring treatment program. With facilities all over the country, from Missouri to Monterey, the location just north of Los Angeles currently offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and beginning in October 2018 will start providing residential treatment. Alsana implements the Adaptive Care Model, which includes medication management, and individual and group therapy utilizing evidence-based approaches, 12-step support and a variety of individualized services. These programs are on a level down system that is highly structured and supportive.
Treatment and Staff
The PHP is the most intensive level of care offered at this location and can consist of up to 12 hours per day of treatment, seven days a week. This phase is ideal for clients who need a substantial amount of support but don’t have the resources or time to attend an inpatient program. This phase includes three supported meals per day and supervised snacks, after which there is a process group. Clients in PHP can also expect three individual therapy sessions per week, one or two visits with the dietitian and psychiatrist, psychoeducational groups and group therapy. After there is some progress in this level of care, clients begin to step down to less days and hours in treatment.
The IOP can be between three and five days a week of treatment where, in addition to receiving a fair amount of therapy and assistance from staff, individuals start to implement their newly acquired life skills in everyday situations. Clients in this track step down to one individual session with a primary therapist per week and one meeting with the dietitian.
Medication management is maintained throughout each level of treatment. Staff of the outpatient tracks at the Westlake locations includes a medical director, psychiatric nurses, LMFTs, LPPs, CADCs, CEDCs, LASACs, a dietitian and a psychiatrist.
Extras
It’s common for clients who are participating in PHP to live in recovery housing associated with the facility. IOP clients are also provided with that option as well, but it’s less encouraged.
There is an extended family support program that includes counseling and education, and a family week.
In Summary
The programs offered through Alsana address each client’s needs individually through personalized goal plans and treatment protocols. The goal of these levels of care is to arm their clients with a steady foundation in recovery and the proper tools to avoid relapse. For anyone struggling with eating disorders that are severely disrupting the quality of their life, seeking care through an organization like Alsana might be an essential first step.
