Alsana: St. Louis Outpatient Review

Alsana, which is Latin for “total health” or “all,” is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment program that offers residential and outpatient tracks including a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).  There are 10 locations throughout the US, and the Missouri location provides all these levels of care.

Treatment is based on a concept known as the Adaptive Care model. Programming is entirely individualized and client focused, offering several group and individual sessions per week, recreational activities and more, primarily utilizing evidence-based protocols. In addition to treating common eating disorders, treatment is also offered for those who are struggling with a co-occurring disorder such as addiction or other mental illness.

Treatment and Staff

The St. Louis outpatient program takes place in a different facility than the residential one. Both the PHP and IOP are provided off Route 44 in Fenton, and programming is offered seven days a week.

The PHP is the most intensive step-down program with up to 12 hours of treatment per day. In this stage it is common for clients to live in supported housing that is provided by Alsana at an additional cost. Initially clients attend treatment every day of the week, starting with three individual sessions per week and stepping down to two per week with five days of treatment. There are also weekly sessions with the staff psychiatrist and dietitian.

The PHP offers three meals per day that are supervised by staff followed up by a process group session. The IOP, which steps down pretty dramatically, has one or two sessions with a primary therapist, one meeting with the dietitian and one monitored meal per day. In this phase clients are establishing goals, working on personal boundaries and relapse prevention. There are also group sessions during the week that address body image and life skills development.

Therapeutic approaches are CBT, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, art and music therapy and expressive therapies. There are medication management options for those with a co-occurring disorder, and though it’s not required, they are encouraged to attend 12-step support meetings within the community.

The outpatient staff includes Master’s-level therapists who are well versed in eating disorders and dual diagnosis clients. The treatment team consists of LPCs, LMFTs, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, dietitians and support staff.

Extras

Clients who are in the IOP also have the option of living in recovery housing. There is a family program that includes counseling and education once a month.

In Summary

The outpatient tracks at the Missouri location of Alsana emphasize the importance of clients putting their acquired life skills to good use while still receiving extensive support through their treatment program and within their community of peers. Anyone struggling with disordered eating would do well to consider seeking help through this reputable network. With a variety of treatment approaches and a well rounded staff, it’s a great resource that’s luckily available in multiple locations.
