Alpine Horizon Review

Alpine Horizon is residential treatment facility that offers holistic care against the backdrop of the famous snow capped mountains of Switzerland. In the comfort of a discrete, luxury chalet, clients can expect individualized and customizable programming, all catered uniquely to each person’s preferences. An array of therapeutic approaches are implemented including evidence-based practices such as EMDR and CBT as well as 12-step support.

Accommodations and Food

The residential facility is in the Gstaad countryside and boasts beautiful views of Rubli, one of the region’s most majestic and iconic mountains. The living quarters are exactly what comes to mind when one hears the word “chalet” with high, wood beam ceilings, crackling fireplaces and gorgeous views from every angle. Only five clients are in treatment at any given time, and all have a private, open floor plan bedrooms and bathrooms. The chalet itself is shared amongst the clients in the program, however for those who desire complete privacy during treatment there are options to be housed in a different building all together in a private villa or separate chalet.

During the initial assessment period clients are asked about their diets and meal preferences, and from there a specialized menu is designed. All food is prepared by internationally acclaimed chefs who create dishes that are exquisite and of the highest nutritional value. Meals can be as adventurous as the client wants, and can include Swiss favorites to any sort of comfort food desired.

Treatment and Staff

Residential treatment is usually based on an initial two week period that’s comprised of multiple workshops and experiential therapies along with relaxation and counseling. After the first two weeks are completed successfully there are aftercare options or the option to extend the stay. There is a strong emphasis on self care at Alpine Horizon, in addition to uncovering the underlying issues or traumas that lead to the client using in the first place.

As previously mentioned, treatment is based on each clients personalized treatment plan and often utilizes evidence-based methods. Psychoeducational and relapse prevention groups are a key element to treatment, but clients do have the choice to not attend any group activities and simply receive individual care if they wish.

Specialty programs for executive burn out are offered that run for one or two weeks at a time. The focus of these tracks is total relaxation and rejuvenation. They also incorporate a family program, while with the other residential track the family program is an additional week of therapy and group work.

Traditional and alternative modalities can include art and music therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Alpha Stim and mindfulness techniques.

There is a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who are addiction specialists, physicians, medical doctors and psychologists. In addition to their experience, this group of international clinicians are able to provide treatment services is a variety of different languages.

Health and wellness are essential elements to treatment at Alpine Horizon, and guides take their clients on excursions in and around the countryside. There are hiking opportunities, wakeboarding, canoeing, golf, archery and of course skiing. There are also relaxation and spa like amenities provided by massage, yoga, reflexology and acupuncture.

In Summary

There are few in the world who wouldn’t want a getaway to Switzerland and stay luxurious accommodations while addressing a chemical dependency. However, what makes the program at Alpine Horizon even more unique is that every client has the option to choose what kind of treatment would be the best for them, and not the other way around. There is a freedom and dignity in choice, and Alpine Horizon goes above and beyond in this sense.
