Alpha Home, located in San Antonio, offers dual diagnosis support for women who suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues. By providing gender-specific treatment, this program allows women to focus on issues that are pertinent to them, including self-esteem and codependency in a nurturing environment. Over the course of the program, women are immersed in the 12 steps and helped with important life skills, a combination that allows them to find sobriety and the courage to maintain it after they leave treatment.
Accommodations and Food
Alpha Home offers two carriage homes for women to live in during treatment. The Mulberry house accommodates up to 31 women while the Carriage house holds 14. The bedrooms are cozy, holding two women at a time, with twin-sized beds and a shared bath. The houses also include a large kitchen, dining room, living room with a television and an on-site case manager.
When it comes to food, meals are a group effort. The women at both houses take turns cooking for one another on a daily basis. Each day, a group from one house prepares the meal while a group from the other house is in charge of the cleanup. The director of food is in charge of doing the weekly grocery shopping for the women and is able to take special dietary needs into account.
Treatment and Staff
With the help of on-site medical students, volunteer doctors, case managers and social workers, women in this program can receive round-the-clock care. While on-site detox is not available, referrals to local centers can be made. Over the course of 72 days, women focus on spirituality, integrity, discipline, dedication and productivity. During the first 30 days, they are required to stay on-campus, participating in daily 12-step meetings, individual counseling, educational lectures and group therapy. Group topics include anger resolution, self-esteem, recovery skills, health and wellness, codependency, family and parenting, trauma, life skills, job hunting, nutrition and processing. Each client is assigned a case manager who meets with them on a weekly basis, overseeing their progress during their entire stay.
Another way that residents are held accountable during treatment is through sponsorship. By working with a sponsor, they can begin following the 12 steps, learning about the nature of their addiction and how to turn it over to a Higher Power.
After the initial 30 days, clients are encouraged to go off into the real world during the day. The program provides support to find local jobs or enter an educational program, giving clients an opportunity to practice important life skills and recognize triggers behind their addiction. Stress, budgeting and time management are all areas that can be worked on during the second phase of treatment. In addition, clients continue to attend 12-step meetings, individual therapy, meetings with sponsors and some group work in the evenings.
Once the 72 days have been completed, clients can receive outpatient treatment during the weekdays. For a few hours a day, individual and group therapy are available as well as childcare. This program typically lasts four to six months and costs $2,400.
Family work can be done on an individual basis. Clients are welcome to invite their family members to attend individual therapy sessions as well as family educational lectures.
This facility does not offer extensive amenities, physical fitness activities are arranged on a weekly basis. There are designated smoking areas outside the house and main facility.
Over the course of 72 days, Alpha Home offers 12-step immersion and integration into real life. With a wide variety of topics pertaining to women and recovery, the program provides an affordable chance at regaining sobriety and leading a healthy life.
