Alpha Center Review
Grand Junction is Colorado’s county seat, situated between the Green River and the Continental Divide. Its mountain biking trails attract people from as far as California. Renowned for its outdoor sports, Grand Junction is also home to Alpha Center, an outpatient clinic offering substance abuse services to adults and adolescents. Founded in 1994 by a former marriage counselor who lost his son to addiction, Alpha Center operates out of a converted two-story house, from nine offices and two group rooms. This family run clinic is one of the largest in the area, seeing over 1,000 clients a month.
Treatment and Staff
Alpha Center believes that addiction is a lifelong disease—as such, treatment ranges anywhere from 30 days to 10 years—clients can keep coming to group and individual therapy for as long as they need or want to. An initial assessment is used to determine whether a client needs short or long-term treatment. This process also addresses a client’s possible need for supplementary services like relationship, employment or financial counseling.
Addiction services at Alpha Center aim to treat the person as a whole—spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally. They also explore a client’s family history in order to better determine how to proceed. The need for dual diagnosis support is determined during this initial assessment. Treatment days can last from 90 minutes of therapy up to eight hours, with breaks to eat; clients come in once a week up to seven days a week. Methods such as CBT, DBT, biofeedback and EMDR for trauma are implemented along with the 12 steps. AA is not mandatory, and Alpha Counseling doesn’t host meetings on-site, but often suggests participation as a way to build and sustain a sober community outside of treatment.
While Alpha Center does not offer detox, they will refer out if a client is in need of stabilization. In addition to group therapy, Alpha provides individual sessions weekly, bi-weekly or daily—whatever the client needs. Additionally, they offer a family program entailing weekly sessions with clients and loved ones—typically, these are done with everyone in the same room.
Alpha Center employs nine highly credentialed men and women who assist over 1,000 clients a month. This breaks down to a client-to-staff ratio of 12-to-one; generally the size of most groups. These professionals are available from 7 am to 9 pm, Monday through Saturday (Sundays are by appointment only).
Extras
As mentioned above, Alpha Center offers biofeedback and EMDR in addition to alternative therapies like interpersonal-growth groups and kinesthetic methods such as chanting and art therapy. Should any of their clients have an aversion to AA, the staff members at Alpha Center are happy to refer them to Celebrate Recovery and/or SMART Recovery.
In Summary
Alpha Center is a family-run business that opens its doors to anyone in need. This is an organization that is sincere about its services; if during the assessment a client doesn’t look like a good fit, the staff is ready to suggest an alternative and help in any way they can. Ultimately, Alpha Center’s a solid choice for a step-down from residential treatment and for someone who doesn’t require 24-hour supervision. Alpha Center understands that recovery is a life long process and treats its clients accordingly.
