Alcove Recovery Review
Alcove Recovery is a Canadian treatment facility in a suburb southwest of Calgary, Alberta. It specializes in the care of women ages 18 and older struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as co-occurring trauma and abuse. Alcove Recovery seeks to break the cycle of addiction in women and their families, through a comprehensive treatment curriculum that includes a three month residential program and aftercare. While many therapeutic methods are incorporated into the programming, neither the 12-step recovery method nor medication management are components of the approach.
Accommodations and Food
Alcove Recovery provides women with a safe recovery environment in family-style accommodations. Mothers with children stay in executive suites to help re-establish the mother-child bond. Clients are responsible for preparing, cooking and eating their meals together.
Treatment and Staff
Many of the Alcove Recovery clients suffer from an addiction as well as co-occurring trauma. As such, the facility offers a holistic mind-body-spirit model for care that focuses on healing the “whole person” rather than only treating symptoms. Alcove’s programming philosophy is holistic, with a range of therapeutic methods integrated to provide each individual client with personalized treatment customized to meet their specific needs. The treatment approach synchronizes a number of therapies including individual and group therapy, mentoring, gender-specific focus groups, recreation, nutrition, life skills and physical fitness. While the treatment program is structured for 12 weeks, clients can stay longer if necessary. In addition, Alcove Recovery offers specialized help for mothers in recovery. Clients engage in parenting training as well as family therapy with their children.
The staff of Alcove is primarily made up of counselors and mentors who have a personal understanding of the recovery process. Without a physician or psychiatrist on staff, medication management is not available for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Alcove Recovery believes in the importance of aftercare. To this end, the facility offers employment referrals, housing services and education in addition to recommendations for ongoing support groups.
