Alaska Dream Center Women’s Center Review

Based out of Palmer, Alaska, Alaska Dream Center is a wide-ranging non-profit founded in 2008 to provide flexible treatment options for local residents struggling with addiction, homelessness, personal health and other co-occurring behavioral health issues. While the group’s overall goal is to reduce the rates of substance abuse within the adult population of Alaska from ages 18 to 59, it does so by structuring programs that address clients’ needs at a variety of different social and personal levels. In addition to its men’s programs, the organization also has a program specifically for women.

Accommodations and Food

All told, the Alaska Dream Center campus is on an expansive 38 acres in the countryside with a creek and a pond on-site. The women’s facility is a renovated coffee shop and hotel facility with a total of 12 private rooms available with twin beds and basic accommodations. Each room also includes its own bathroom suite as well. In addition to the client rooms, the facility also has several apartments for staff members to live in on the top floor as well. other amenities include an on-site coffee house, caretaker’s cabin and a barn. Throughout their stay, all residents eat three meals a day in an on-site cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. While medical services are not available, referrals can be given upon request. Unlike many similar programs, treatment at Alaska Dream Center lasts for a year and is broken up into different phases. The initial orientation phase lasts three weeks followed by a recovery phase, which lasts for 16 weeks and involves most of the therapy. After that comes the application phase that’s 12 weeks long and includes more spiritual counseling and preparation for the outside world. Finally, the 12 week transition phase helps clients securely and comfortably discharge from the program.

In the middle phase of the extended care treatment, residents attend regular group and individual therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. The program is Christian-oriented and includes life skills training, emotional processing, job application guidance and other related services. Group sessions cover many different topics including spirituality, relationship skills and 12-step recovery concepts.

The staff at Alaska Dream Center consists of state-certified addiction counselors, spiritual counselors and volunteers.

Extras

Individuals who complete primary care can also continue on to aftercare and GED completion programs through Alaska Dream Center. The facility also plans off-site trips for residents and accepts volunteers to help out with the programs as well.

In Summary

In all, the Alaska Dream Center is a wide-ranging resource for women struggling with addiction and homelessness. The program is long-term and includes Christian-oriented counseling along with life skills, job training and more. While it may be somewhat of a niche option, Alaska Dream Center remains a strong resource for those in the area it serves.
