AKUA Mind & Body offers detox, residential and Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) in two locations in Orange County, California. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Evan Miller and Kenny Dewan, AKUA is accredited and licensed by various agencies including the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare. Its detox program in Costa Mesa treats adults with a full range of substance addictions.

Accommodations and Food

AKUA’s detox program is separated in two gender-specific residences that can accommodate six women and six men. Each facility is a home-style residence that is shared with the inpatient treatment clients. Each home is well appointed with upscale decor and fixtures. Bedrooms and bathrooms are each shared by two clients. The residences have a living room, kitchen, Ping-Pong table, pool, hot tub and outside recreational space.

Living rooms in both residences have a TV with cable and Netflix. TV viewing is permitted at the end of the day. There is no Internet or access to a computer and cell phones and personal electronic devices are not permitted. Clients may use the residence’s phone at certain hours. Visitation is not permitted for detox clients.

Meals are designed by a dietician and prepared by a private chef and served buffet style. Though sugar and caffeine are allowed, AKUA prioritizes brain healthy food.

Treatment and Staff

AKUA’s detox program is five to seven days long separated in to two gender-specific programs, the Mahalo Program for men and the Aloha Program for women. The course of treatment is in three phases: Evaluation, Stabilization and Continuing Care. AKUA’s detox program treats a full range of substance addictions including alcohol, benzodiazepine, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, opiates, and also help the for those who wish to step down from the detox medication methadone.

During the evaluation, clients are screened for substances and then receive an individualized treatment plan. During the stabilization phase, clients receive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to assist with withdrawal pains. AKUA’s detox treatment centers around a psychodynamic approach and include CBT, DBT, EMDR, 12-step, dual diagnosis support with an individual and group therapy setting. Group topics include gender-specific trauma recovery.

Wake up is at 7:30 am and the clients’ daily schedule includes meditation, individual and group sessions, medical appointments and holistic options like art therapymusic therapy. yoga and exercise, as well as personal time. Detox clients attend one individual session and two group session a day. Upon completing detox, clients work with a counselor to craft a continuing care treatment plan, which can include continuing treatment at AKUA’s residential and outpatient programs.

Gender-specific staff for the men’s and women’s programs include psychiatrists, LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs, LPNs, CADCs, certified case managers and registered clinical support staff. The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-one.
