Akeso Review

Located in South Africa, Akeso Behavioral Health Group is a mental health treatment organization that specializes in the care of clients struggling with a range of psychiatric conditions including major depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, trauma, substance abuse and eating disorders. Akeso offers specialized, private residential care in 13 psychiatric clinics throughout the country including Gauteng, the Western Cape and Kwazulu Natal. The facility utilizes the Centre of Psychotherapy Excellence (COPE) treatment program, a bio-psycho-social model of customized, integrated, family-oriented care. Akeso provides a continuum of care that includes residential programming, outpatient services and family counseling. The primary offerings are therapy and medication management. As such, the 12-step recovery method is not a component of the programming.

Accommodations and Food

Akeso has a total of 13 clinics but the Montrose Manor location is the most luxurious of its facilities, situated in Bishopscourt, a suburb of Cape Town, and specializing in the treatment of individuals with a range of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. The beautiful residence provides world-class accommodations in a safe and comfortable environment, complete with gorgeous views of nearby Table Mountain. The estate has large double-occupancy bedrooms with modern decor, spacious floor plans, queen-sized beds, storage space, a desk and plenty of natural light. There is a large common room with a fireplace and comfortable furnishings, relaxing indoor-outdoor lounges, patios, a gym, ping pong table and a stunning wraparound pool with ample poolside seating.

Residents are advised to bring seasonal-appropriate clothing as well as toiletries. There are laundry facilities on-site. Pocket money is deposited before beginning treatment and allocated weekly as an allowance. The use of internet and electronic devices is generally restricted but considered on a case by case basis. In addition, clients are allowed contact with family and friends at any time after completion of the first week of treatment.

Montrose Manor residents enjoy healthy delicious cuisine prepared by an onsite executive chef. Dietary restrictions and allergies can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Clients entering Akeso undergo a comprehensive individual assessment run by a psychologist, psychiatrist, physician and a nurse. Based off of the evaluation, the staff customizes the most effective treatment plan suited to meet the specific needs of the client. Akeso asks clients to take responsibility for their own treatment, as a willingness to speak honestly is an integral part of treatment.

Akeso offers multidisciplinary programming for clients with a wide range of psychiatric and addiction conditions. Through this integrated treatment philosophy, clients are seen by psychiatrists, general physicians, psychologists and family therapists. The approach includes individual and group therapy, occupational therapy, psychoeducation, physical fitness and wellness activities, though the cornerstone of treatment is the evidence-based DBT.

Every Akeso facility is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, dietary nutritionist and an art and drama therapist as well as a nursing team. For individuals in need of dual diagnosis support, medication management is available.

Extras

While most of the Akeso locations run general psychiatry, dual diagnosis and young adults units, some also offer several specialized programs including geriatric psychiatry, eating disorders, dual diagnosis for adolescents and postpartum depression.

Akeso believes that family support is a significant component to the success of a sustainable recovery. To this end, it facilitates a family program to educate and provide support for the relatives of clients.

In Summary

Akeso Behavioral Health Group provides a multidisciplinary bio-psycho-social approach where clients are treated by a team of nurses, psychiatrists, physicians, psychologist, therapists, dieticians and speciality therapists. Most of the 13 Akeso locations provide programming for psychiatry, dual diagnosis clients and young adults, while some of the facilities offer more specialized treatment for eating disorders, adolescent dual diagnosis and postpartum depression. For clients in South Africa seeking a resource that offers comprehensive treatment programming, specialized outpatient services and an impressive, multidisciplinary staff, the Akeso Group is an excellent option.
