kahului hawaiiAkamai Recovery Maui Review

Akamai Recovery Maui provides outpatient treatment to adults struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. The facility’s modest size provides an intimate and safe atmosphere for clients to properly heal from addiction. Services include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and basic treatment through individual therapy sessions. All services are offered at the facility located in Maui, Hawaii.

Treatment and Staff

Upon beginning treatment at Akamai, clients must undergo an initial evaluation. Participants are then placed in a program that best meets their needs. If the client is only interested in individual therapy then they can be matched with a therapist to work with on a one-on-one basis. Still, those in either program are also offered individual sessions as a supplement to group therapy. These sessions are scheduled as needed and are usually about an hour long each. Those dealing with co-occurring disorders have access to on-site medication management services.

Treatment options include a PHP and an IOP that both consist of group and individual therapy sessions. Adults in PHP must attend treatment from 9 am to 4 pm on Monday through Friday, while those in IOP are provided three hour-long group therapy sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the mornings and evenings.

Group therapy sessions are led by substance abuse counselors who apply educational and therapeutic methods during therapy. Topics discussed include destructive thinking and behaviors, life skills, relapse prevention, substance abuse education and the disease of addiction. All groups are co-ed and can accommodate a maximum of eight people at a time. The 12 steps are not part of treatment at Akamai but those interested in attending AA/NA meetings can be provided information upon request.

Clinicians at Akamai Recovery Maui include Joanne Marroni, a Licensed Mental Health and Substance Abuse counselor who is also certified in treating those with co-occurring disorders.  Staff also includes a psychiatrist and a few other licensed clinicians with experience in dealing with mental illness and addiction. Staff members use traditional talk therapy and evidence-based methods like CBT and DBT.

Extras

Aftercare planning is also implemented into each client’s treatment. These services vary from person to person, though options can include stepping down from PHP to IOP or scheduling  individual therapy to monitor progress.

Joanne Marroni’s private practice, ReSolution Counseling, is located just down the hall in the same building as ARM. Marroni provides comprehensive services to individuals and their families through individual therapy scheduled as needed depending on each client’s situation.

In Summary

Overall, Akamai Recovery Maui provides structured and intensive programs to adults who demonstrate a desire to change. Akamai seeks to keep groups small so that treatment is intimate while also offering less-intensive individual therapy sessions for those interested. In all, Akamai Recovery Maui is an affordable and flexible resource to those in Hawaii.
