The Aiken Center is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility located in Aiken, South Carolina. Just off of the Gregg Highway and surrounded by old-growth oak trees, Aiken is tucked away in a private location, so clients to feel secure and anonymous during their treatment. Accredited through CARF since 1994, Aiken offers a range of treatment options for adults and adolescents.

Treatment and Staff

All clients initially undergo a phone interview followed by a formal assessment under the supervision of a staff CADC. Clients work with their counselors to create an individualized treatment plan that includes goals, time commitments and an exit strategy. Each client is assigned a specific counselor with whom they will meet for individual therapy once per week. All therapy sessions are conducted using Gorski Relapse Prevention Therapy and CBT techniques.

The co-ed outpatient treatment group for adults meets for a minimum of eight weeks. Clients participate in both group therapy and family counseling. There are several specialized groups, including the “Reality Group” which is a ninety minute process group that addresses the phases of addiction and the repercussions of substance abuse. The “Continuing Care” group meets once a week for an hour and a half and addresses relapse prevention strategies.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) incorporates more intense group topics including education, behavioral modification and social strategies. Additionally, there are three weekly process groups lasting two and a half to three hours each. Aiken also offers a women’s gender-specific IOP that follows the same parameters as the general IOP, meeting three times per week for three hours but instead discusses women’s issues in a confidential setting.

The Youth Services program is of varied length and is designed to provide treatment options for individuals ages 17 and under. Youth members attend group therapy sessions twice per week for an hour and a half, as well as individual therapy once a week for one hour. The services include an adolescent therapy group for young people facing legal issues—including DUI offenders.

The Alcohol Intervention Program is designed for individuals ages 17 through 20 with multiple underage drinking or drug offenses. Aiken also has three youth outreach programs that work with schools, churches, neighborhoods and businesses to connect with kids and their families to raise awareness around preventing underage drinking and drug use.

Aiken hosts an on-site open NA meeting every Wednesday evening for clients and community members. Clients are encouraged to attend off-site 12-step meetings, as well.

The staff includes CADCs, MFTs, psychologists who specialize in addiction treatment and medical doctors who can provide medication management. The Aiken Center does not offer detox, medication-assisted treatment for opiate addicts or inpatient services, but referrals will be provided if necessary.

Extras

Aiken’s aftercare program meets once a week for group therapy for two weeks then drops to every other week for a month. Alumni of the Aiken program are encouraged to attend to support current clients and to stay connected to other graduates of the program.

Gambling Addiction services are also available for individuals and their families. MFTs work with clients to identify their unique issues and recovery plans. Primarily treated through individual and family therapy, clients are introduced to relapse prevention techniques and Gambler’s Anonymous meetings for continued support.

Summary

Aiken Center offers a range of outpatient programs to suit the varying needs of their community. Understanding that there is no cookie-cutter approach to substance abuse treatment, staff works with each client to create individualized and evidence based treatment plans. Using a treatment approach that addresses total-family wellness, Aiken addresses the needs and behaviors of the addict and their loved ones at an affordable price.
