Ai Pono is an expansive behavioral health organization with several facilities spread throughout the Hawaiian islands, namely on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii itself. Founded in 1982, Ai Pono offers treatment to adolescent and adult women struggling with eating disorders, though support for a range of co-occurring disorders is also available. In addition to its more flexible outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Ai Pono also provides several different residential treatment tracks at its facility in Wailuku, Oahu.
Accommodations and Food
The Ai Pono facility is an intimate one, with a total of eight beds available for residents in both shared and private rooms. Shared bedrooms are split between two to three clients and come complete with full beds, nightstands with lamps, dressers, closet space and plenty of natural light. The rest of the facility includes spacious common areas with lounge seating, outdoor patios, walking paths and oceanic views. The home also has a modern kitchen attached to a common dining area. Throughout their stay, all residents are served three healthy and delicious meals a day with the help of on-site nutritionists and chefs.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, all clients go through an initial assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and their medical history. Those in need of detox or medical stabilization can do so on-site before continuing on to treatment. Specific curricula are available for different eating disorders as well as for different ages.
Once stabilized, residents attend full days of treatment with individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and EMDR. In addition to psychotherapy, programs also include a host of holistic therapies as well such as art therapy, mindfulness training, yoga, meditation and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Groups cover many topics such as life skills, codependency, self-esteem, cooking, nutrition and emotional processing. Supervised meals and exposure therapy are both used to treat eating disorders with dual diagnosis support and medication management also available. Although 12-step participation may be encouraged in some cases, it is not strictly required.
The staff at Ai Pono consists of LMFTs, doctors, RDNs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors.
In addition to its Hawaii-based programs, Ai Pono also has sister facilities in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, California under the umbrella of Central Coast Treatment Center. Both places provide outpatient-based care for eating disorders using the same modalities described above. As mentioned, outpatient plans are offered at the Hawaiian islands locations as well. Those who complete treatment can also work with staff to develop stepped down aftercare plans.
In all, Ai Pono’s residential programs for eating disorders provide a calm and tranquil environment for adolescent and adult women to recover. Treatment plans are individualized and include medical and psychiatric care, nutritional education, holistic support and evidence-based therapy. Although the cost of treatment will vary depending on insurance specifics and length of stay, Ai Pono’s residential programs are worth considering for those struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues.
