Ai Pono Outpatient Review

With several facilities throughout the Hawaiian islands (on Oahu, Hawaii and Maui), Ai Pono is a wide ranging health facility founded in 1982. Though the organization specializes in treating eating disorders, support for co-occurring disorders is also provided along with programs specific to the needs of adults and adolescents. In addition to its more intensive residential treatment options, Ai Pono also offers outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for various needs.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. Those who need medical stabilization or detox services can do so on-site through the residential care plan, though others are recommended to seek these services out beforehand. The specifics of outpatient care vary, though IOP typically meets between three to seven days a week for three-and-a-half hours a day at the organization’s facility in Kamuela, Hawaii. PHP, on the other hand, runs five to seven days a week and meets from noon to 7:15 pm at the Maui location.

In both of the above, treatment plans include individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Holistic methods are also used including art therapy, mindfulness training, meditation, yoga and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Groups cover a range of topics including proper nutrition, life skills, codependency, emotional processing, self-esteem and basic cooking skills. Supervised meals and exposure therapy are available as well. While 12-step participation may be encouraged, it is not necessarily required. As mentioned, dual diagnosis support and medication management are also available.

The staff at Ai Pono consists of doctors, LMFTs, RDNs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors.

Extras

The organization also runs sister facilities on the mainland of the United States in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, California. Both of these facilities operate under the umbrella of Central Coast Treatment Center and offer much of the same therapy in the form of IOP and PHP tracks. Those who complete one of the above programs can also work with staff members on stepped down aftercare plans as necessary.

In Summary

Overall, Ai Pono is a diverse facility with many different programs available for clients struggling with eating disorders. Treatment plans include medical and psychiatric oversight, nutritional education, holistic care and evidence-based therapy. All outpatient care plans are flexible enough to fit a range of schedules and needs. Although the cost of care is likely to vary based on insurance strength and length of stay, Ai Pono’s outpatient programs remain a strong, well-rounded resource for those in the area.
