AHRC Healthcare, Inc. was founded in New York City 65 years ago by a small group of parents hoping to provide services for their children with disabilities. AHRC (the Association for the Help of Retarded Children) has since grown into a multi-service organization with educational, advocacy, community and day services available throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
AHRC’s broad network of services and programs include a substance abuse treatment program through Access Community Health Centers. This specialized program provides prevention, education, information, referrals and outpatient substance abuse care for adults with traumatic brain injuries, behavioral and intellectual disabilities and co-occurring disorder support with an emphasis on the 12 steps.
Treatment and Staff
The chemical dependency services at AHRC are strictly outpatient but offer a multi-field approach to ensure a solid and well-rounded foundation for recovery. Every client is assessed to determine his or her individualized treatment plan. While the number of group and individual sessions required for each client varies, all are required to attend a 12-step meeting at least once a day in addition to at least one daily CBT-based group session which covers topics such as harm reduction, relapse prevention, skill building and addiction education. Clients typically schedule at least one individual therapy session per week.
The length of the program is different for every client and may change depending on their progress, but is typically anywhere from 30 to 90 days. AHRC also offers a “Prevention, Information, Education, and Referral” program—or PIER—that provides services and informational programs that serve to educate the community on the dangers of addiction and chemical dependency.
The staff at AHRC consists of LADCs and LPCs.
Extras
In addition to their substance abuse treatment program, AHRC’s behavioral health services offer a wealth of resources for individuals and families. Programs include depression screening, psychiatric help, mental health counseling and services, developmental disability services, LGBT support groups, counseling services and HIV/AID services and programs. AHRC also offers a medical clinic, a dental clinic, housing and legal services, educational programs and prevention services.
AHRC also integrates a holistic approach which may include mindfulness training, meditation sessions and referrals for yoga or acupuncture sessions.
