AfterPartyPod: Paul Gilmartin

Paul GilmartinTo some, Paul Gilmartin is the affable longtime co-host of TBS’ Dinner and a Movie. But to a certain pod-centered segment of the population, all that he’s done in comedy (and he’s done quite a lot, between Dinner and a Movie, his Comedy Central special, his Politically Incorrect and Craig Ferguson Show spots and his multiple Montreal Comedy Festival and Aspen Comedy Festival appearances) pales in comparison to what he’s done with The Mental Illness Happy Hour. MentalPod, as its known, is a weekly podcast Gilmartin launched in 2011 which features a guest (usually a fellow comedian) and focuses wholeheartedly on issues around mental illness—including depression, addiction, anxiety, abuse and addiction (Gilmartin is himself sober). The podcast has received its share of plaudits (The New York Times and The Atlantic have both chimed in, among many others) but is perhaps most notable for the level of unsettling issues it’s willing to conquer. The site for the podcast is also a treasure trove of information, between its well-populated forums and the surveys on shame and secrets, happy moments, body shame and more. On this week’s AfterPartyPod, Gilmartin and I discuss abuse, addiction and the way they coexist (I swear it’s more fun than it sounds). Listen here.
