Claudia LonowIf you don’t know Claudia Lonow’s name, you surely know her humor. The former teen star (she played Diana on Knots Landing, y’all) created the before-its-time show Rude Awakening about an actress struggling with sobriety for Showtime back in 1998. It starred Sherilyn Fenn, was based on Lonow’s life and was, randomly, a show that I had a meeting about back when I was a coke-addicted wanna-be writer who had one good TV spec script to her name. Long story short: my then-agent got that script to Lonow, she liked it and so we met. I thought she seemed incredibly inspiring and cool but she was also sober and these things just did not compute in my mind back then. Anywho, I did not get the job which I think we can all agree is a good thing, since I recall having cocaine dripping down the back of my throat during said meeting. In the interview, we get into all that, Lonow’s subsequent career [she went on to work on Less Than Perfect, The War at Home and Accidentally on Purpose before creating, writing and producing last year’s sitcom How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)].
