Affinity Behavioral Health Review

Affinity Behavioral Health offers drug and alcohol treatment in Appleton and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, as part of a history of care extending to its founding in 1891 by a brotherhood of Franciscan monks. With residential care, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and aftercare, Affinity offers treatment in a clinical setting, which includes dual diagnosis support. The facility offers an introduction to the 12 steps as well as other treatment modalities at an economical price, with most insurance accepted. Detox is not offered.

Accommodations and Food

Clients in the 11-bed inpatient program at Affinity’s Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh are housed in a hospital setting with double-occupancy rooms. Each resident gets their own dresser and shares a bathroom with a roommate. There is also a community room where clients can interact with one another, read or relax when groups are not in session.

The food at Affinity is prepared by hospital cafeteria employees, and includes an eclectic mix of meals. All are well-balanced and healthy, and any medically-mandated dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Nutritionists are on staff in the drug and alcohol program to ensure clients’ needs are met, as malnutrition can often result as a side effect of chemical dependency and mental illness.

Treatment and Staff

The goal of Affinity is to treat each resident as a whole, addressing the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual issues that have led to drug and alcohol abuse. After a comprehensive assessment, each client is given a treatment plan and their own team. Both residential and IOP clients receive individual and group therapy. Groups that residents attend depend on their specific needs. They can include psychoeducation on dual diagnosis, addiction-centered therapy, CBT, relapse prevention, process groups and an introduction to the 12 steps; meetings are all off-site.

The IOP meets three times a week for three-hour sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Clients can choose between morning or evening sessions. The length of treatment varies according to each client’s progress.

Staff members at Affinity include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, nurses, occupational therapists, nutritionists, recreation therapists and chaplains. The staff-to-client ratio is low with groups totaling no more than 10. Each resident stays in close contact with their treatment team, and each receives one-on-one counseling at least once a week. Those who need more one-on-one treatment are able to have additional individual sessions.

The inpatient unit has constant supervision with an overnight nurse staff as well as other staff members.

Extras

Occupational therapy and recreational therapy, which can include craft-making and other art or movement activities, is also available to clients. In addition, Affinity offers an aftercare program for those who have completed the inpatient or IOP.

In Summary

For those looking for an economical drug and alcohol facility that offers a wide spectrum of treatment modalities and plenty of individual attention in a hospital setting, Affinity may be a good choice. With a flexible treatment plan facilitated by credentialed staff members from different disciplines, those in need of a dynamic recovery program will benefit from the programs at Affinity Behavioral Health.
