An outpatient substance abuse clinic set in Forest Hills, a neighborhood located in the New York City borough of Queens, Advanced Human Services was established in 2008. An OASAS certified organization, Advanced Human Services provides medical detox, medication assisted treatment, a dual diagnosis track and evaluations for DWI offenses.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Advanced Human Services begins with an assessment. Detox is available on an outpatient basis, meaning clients stay at home while making daily visits to the facility for medical monitoring, which are typically one to two hours long. While Advanced Health Services does employ a nursing staff, they are only available during the detox process.
AHS’s standard outpatient program consists of two group and one individual therapy session per week. These sessions include CBT and the use of 12-step principles, though there are no meetings offered on-site.
There is also a dual diagnosis track called the MICA (Mentally Ill Chemical Abuse) Treatment Program which includes a psycho-social and psychiatric assessment, medication management monitoring and drug screening. There is a psychiatrist on staff who meets with clients an average of once a month. Advanced Human Services also uses what they call “contingency management therapy,” which involves a series of systematic reinforcements to positive and negative behavior during each client’s treatment. Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is also used.
There is also a computer assisted cognitive rehab program which seeks to improve mental control through computer programs. Finally, AHS also offers a family program which allows clients to attend group therapy with their family members.
AHS staff includes a medical doctor and a psychiatrist; clients visit with them as needed, typically once a month. Those in the dual diagnosis program visit with the psychiatrist more frequently. The rest of the staff is comprised of CDACs who handle daily group and individual therapy sessions. There are also two registered nurses on staff to assist clients through the detox process.
Given Forrest Hills’ large immigrant community, AHS also tailors its program to meet the needs of primarily Russian-speakers for whom English is a second language. They also provide services in Farsi and Polish when necessary.
Overall, Advanced Human Services is a facility concerned with the future of recovery, offering various forward-thinking methods of treatment. Furthermore, the facility tailors its program to meet the needs of its particular Queens community. While those looking for a facility with a more rigorous outpatient program may want to look elsewhere, others looking for a more flexible option would do well by considering Advanced Human Services.
