Adult Rehabilitation Ministry Review
Adult Rehabilitation Ministry (ARM) is a long term, gender-specific program for adult men in Dallas, Texas. ARM is a 12-step and faith based program that focuses on building essential life skills, relapse prevention and job readiness. It was originally established in 1989 by the late pastor Emeritus CBT Smith. Smith wanted to create a safe environment with a Christian based treatment program that helped clients free themselves of the burden of drugs and alcohol. While the initial program began in a bus transporting men to and from AA meetings and prayer services, today it offers a comprehensive residential program that, to date, has served over 3,000 people within a supportive and caring community. In addition, ARM now offers substance abuse treatment programs to both women and men.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facilities consist of three houses that can accommodate up to 24 clients. One of the residential locations is adjacent to the church where much of the program takes place.
Clients live in private homes in shared, dorm style bedrooms. These homes are comfortable and provide all the necessities, including food.
Treatment and Staff
The first phase of treatment at ARM entails a six month commitment to the program. During the first four months in this stage clients mainly stay at the facility and focus on their recovery. Any outside activities are limited.
Residential programming is comprehensive and includes a structured regimen of 12-step meetings, Bible study, character development, and job training and readiness.
The aftercare phase offers another six months of housing while starting the process of transitioning back into the clients communities. Clients continue to attend regular AA meetings and participate in the residential services. During this stage, however, clients begin to receive guidance for money management and social skills enrichment classes.
Staff who oversee this program are all active members of the church who have a background and education in social work, counseling, human development or theology.
Extras
There is a special relapse prevention level of care for clients who have gone through the initial stages of treatment. This level of care doesn’t have a designated amount of time that clients are expected to remain in the program. Above all, this program reinforces the skills learning during primary care, and engages clients in forming a solid relapse prevention plan before they are discharged.
In Summary
ARM Ministries has provided over 3,000 men with its addiction services since its inception in 1989. It’ worth noting, ARM is very spiritual and bases all programming on the teachings of God and the Bible, though is not judgmental of other people’s personal beliefs. This program offers an alternative way of viewing life and has given many families a second chance at happiness.
