Adolescent Substance Abuse ProgramThe Basics

The Adolescent Substance Abuse Program has been providing substance abuse services to adolescents in the state of Arizona since 1991. With three locations—in Scottsdale, West Valley and East Valley—ASAP provides a broad network of resources to the communities it serves. Specializing in Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), the ASAP evidence-based treatment curriculum was created by a team of three psychologists who aim to create “changes in home, family, peer and school environments that yield lasting sobriety and vastly improved quality of life for the entire family.”

Treatment and Staff

The IOP offered at the various ASAP locations is 10 weeks in length and consists of three evening group therapy sessions per week. One of these sessions requires attendance of parents, guardians or loved ones to participate in multi-family therapy.

The components of treatment carried out during group sessions include drug education, coping skills training, emotional processing and multi-family therapy. Topics covered under drug education include relapse prevention, consequences of chemical use, peer pressure and the recovery model. Coping skills training includes topics such as conflict resolution, problem solving and patterns of use. Emotional processing includes individual therapy and focuses on emotional recovery and uniting with family.

CBT methodology is used during treatment and the 12 steps are encouraged but not required. Random urinalysis and drug testing are also a part of the program. The client’s commitment to the program both on-site and at home is crucial to recovery; he or she must want and actively try to get better. Family involvement is also key at ASAP as clients are adolescents and are still in the care of and in need of their parents and loved ones.

The staff at ASAP consists of a clinical psychologist, LCDCs and LPCs.

Extras

The comprehensive family program at ASAP includes multi-family groups which directly involves the client’s loved ones and develops skills to build communication and trust in order to prevent relapse and to strengthen family bonds.

Additionally, ASAP provides a referral system for those seeking further services outside the scope of the IOP and clients are also provided a list of community resources to help support long-term sobriety.

In Summary

Although ASAP does not offer luxurious amenities or an inpatient program, the foundation of its IOP is built on extensive research with the specific recovery needs of adolescents in mind. Through multi-faceted group sessions and a strong emphasis on family involvement, clients are given strong footing for lasting recovery.
