Boynton Beach FloridaAddison House Review

Located on the coast between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton in Boynton Beach, Florida, Addison House provides comprehensive sober living for men in recovery. They utilize a multi-phase program so that men can learn basic life skills and recovery tools, which helps them transition from lives of addiction to healthy independent men.

Accommodations and Amenities

Addison House operates two residences, each accommodating between eight and ten clients. The houses are centrally located and in close proximity to 12-step meetings, shopping and the beach. The homes are comfortably furnished. While some single rooms are available, residents are typically paired in double-occupancy furnished rooms. Beds come with top-of-the-line memory foam mattresses. One house includes an exquisite fire pit, surrounded by a paved meditation garden, which features colorful orange and red potted plants, and matching pillows propped against patio chairs. The garden is enclosed with palm trees, which provide lush greenery and shade.

The men are responsible for their own groceries, and food preparation, which is done in fully equipped gourmet kitchens. Amenities include cable, Wi-Fi and HDTV. House managers live on-site at both locations.

Rules and Regulations

Addison House only accepts men who have successfully completed 30, 60 or 90-days of residential treatment. The residences operate on a four-phase program. Depending on their previous treatment, some clients enter the program at the immersion phase and some jump right into the managed phase.

During the immersion phase, clients delve into a 12-step program by attending AA/NA meetings on a daily basis. They are required to get a sponsor, home group and three verified peer support phone numbers. Other requirements include performing daily chores and attending an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), as well as participating in individual therapy. Residents must also download a relapse trigger mobile app, such as sobertool.com. This helps them identify emotions which lead to relapse. The mobile apps help clients veer away from relapse thinking to a mindset of recovery by offering inspirational messages and helpful tips.

After clients complete the immersion phase, they progress into the managed phase. The managed phase includes attending 90 meetings in 90 days (for new clients) as well as IOP. Those who have entered this phase from the immersion phase continue attending daily meetings, as well as IOP. During this phase, an on-site life skills program is offered. Topics include budgeting, job search skills, money management, goal setting, organization and vocational planning. The managed phase lasts between one and three months.

During this time, the curfew is 10:30 pm. After that, curfew is assigned per client’s progress. During the third or monitored phase, clients continue working on their recovery programs. By this point, they are permitted to attend just five weekly 12-step meetings. Additionally, they receive managed debit cards, which are used towards purchase of groceries, cigarettes or sundries. Vehicles are allowed, depending on a client’s advancement. Prior to bringing any vehicles to the house, car owners must provide proof of insurance and a valid license and registration card.

The last phase is the step down level. Clients are allowed some freedom in working their recovery programs. Additionally, they are guided into making a healthy transition back into society, by being provided with housing referrals, job leads and academic guidance. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted at every phase of the program. At Addison House, residents who relapse are taken to a monitored off-site facility. Once they recuperate, they meet with staff to discuss going back to Addison House or pursuing a more intensive level of care.
