Addiction Solutions Counseling Center MIAddiction Solutions Counseling Center (ASCC) Review

Addiction Solutions Counseling Center (ASCC)—located in Central Michigan—offers healthcare services and drug addiction treatment at facilities in Mount Pleasant and Alma. Services are available to clients in Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Mecosta, Midland, Montcalm and Osceola counties. ASCC outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are comprised of drug and alcohol education groups, individual counseling and group counseling. Specialty groups—like the Suboxone Group for medication-assisted treatment—and additional services are available to women and criminal justice clients.

Treatment and Staff

Clients receive bio-psycho-social assessments and evaluations before beginning treatment. Staff take into account substance use and client demographics. Counseling work at ASCC focuses on strengthening individuals while also emphasizing the role of family issues. Frequency of individual counseling depends on the needs of the client. If clients are in the IOP track, they complete nine or more hours of therapeutic sessions. For outpatient treatment, clients attend both groups and individual sessions at least once a week, depending on the needs of the client. Individuals can invite family members to join for previously-scheduled one-on-one sessions. Each session is typically an hour in length.

Clients work with therapists on the effects of addiction, developing coping skills and identifying recovery-specific goals. Individual sessions with family members may come at an additional cost to clients, as some insurances do not cover family and/or couples counseling. Clients may opt for anger management and/or gambling addiction as themes to focus on during individual sessions. A certified gambling addiction therapist works with clients for one-hour sessions. These sessions are state-funded, at no additional cost to clients.

ASCC offers several types of group counseling sessions. There are no 12-step oriented groups on-site. The Intensive Relapse Prevention Group, which is available to both outpatient and IOP clients, meets twice a week for 90 minutes. The length of this group is six weeks. The Anger Management group requires clients to attend 12 sessions (ASCC offers up to 52 sessions). One-on-one sessions are available, where staff work with clients on managing emotions and developing healthy methods of communication. The Women’s group is available to all women, including those who are pregnant or post-partum. The Suboxone group provides follow-up counseling to clients who undergo medication-assisted treatment. Finally, the Early Recovery group is available to clients who are just beginning their recovery from substance abuse.

The Alcohol Education group (four hours required), the Drug Education group (five hours required) and the Alcohol Highway Safety Education class (six hours required) are available to court-mandated clients. These groups and/or classes are designed as education interventions for clients with potential substance abuse issues.

The Executive Director and Clinical Supervisor, who is also a therapist at Mt. Pleasant, leads staff and programming with the Program Director (for both facilities), who is also a therapist. The Medical Director is a doctor of osteopathy, who is also a psychiatrist for the Mount Pleasant facility. A therapist is the Women’s Program Director for the Alma facility. Staff at both locations include CADCs and LPCs.

Extras

Language interpreters, including American Sign Language, are available at ASCC.

ASCC provides Driver’s License Evaluations. Staff conduct assessments for clients to reinstate their drivers’ licenses per the requirements of the Michigan Secretary of State Office. The assessments require 90 minutes to complete.

Medicaid is accepted. Clients may qualify for partial-payment assistance. If clients fit the guidelines of qualification, individual sessions are $10 and group sessions are $5. Evaluations for this benefit begin on October 1 each year.

In Summary

Addiction Solutions Counseling Center is a group-focused treatment facility. Though outpatient and IOP are not 12-step based programs, client treatment is centered on the mentality of strength in numbers, communal support and group recovery. ASCC offers comprehensive treatment to clients in Michigan at an affordable rate. Clinical staff who specialize in therapy, psychiatry and addiction treatment are a definite plus to client treatment at ASCC.
