Located outside Toronto, Canada in the town of Utopia, the Addiction Canada Recovery Academy is an adult residential rehab program that offers a unique approach to treatment. Recovery Academy turns the experience of attending an addiction treatment program into clients being students of life. The residents learn about the science of addiction and graduate with a certificate at the end of treatment. This program includes long-term aftercare plans.
Accommodations and Food
The Addiction Canada Recovery Academy housing unit is in a large, two story brick building that used to be a private boarding school. There are men and women housed in the same facility, which can accommodate up to 65 clients at once, though in different wings, and mainly in bedrooms that are double occupancy with private bathrooms. There are a few private bedrooms and suites available for an additional charge. Classrooms, offices, a large kitchen and dining room are in the main building, and on the grounds there are medical facilities, nurses and staff quarters.
A chef who designs healthy menus and serves three meals a day prepares the meals. Coffee and tea are offered throughout the day along with healthy snacks.
Treatment and Staff
The Utopia location of Addiction Canada has a different approach than the rest of the facilities. The clients enroll in treatment as students and take courses in addiction and life skills. The clients participate in 60 to 90 day courses, which incorporate recovery and addiction education, with the intent that clients leave treatment both clean of drugs and alcohol and able to embark on a new life path and career.
The courses explore relapse prevention, coping skills, crisis intervention and life after treatment. There are traditional therapy methods like CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) employed. Also incorporated into daily treatment and lectures are lessons how to apply new knowledge and skills into everyday life. There are also group and individual therapy sessions regularly.
The staff is comprised of addiction specialists who are doubling as instructors. Clinical staff includes LCDCs, LCSWs, psychologists and a medical staff of doctors and nurses, chefs, housekeeping, resident advisors and security.
Extras
The sprawling, well-maintained grounds of the Addiction Canada Recovery Academy include walking paths and areas for recreational activities, like soccer, tennis and basketball. There is also an onsite gym with cardio machines and free weights that clients have access to in between programs.
Family therapy is a service that is offered to all clients, and 12-month aftercare.

Addiction Canada Recovery Academy’s unique approach of having the clients become excited about sobriety and their lives again by becoming students is a novel idea. The clients leave treatment with a certificate of completion and a new lease on life, which is a good combination for maintaining sobriety.
