AdCare HospitalThe Basics

A New England institution certified by the Joint Commission, AdCare Hospital offers both residential and outpatient services at several locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) locations include Boston, Quincey, Warwick, North Dartmouth and West Springfield while the inpatient programs are based out of Worcester and Rhode Island.

Accommodations and Food

AdCare’s Worchester location is housed in a hospital-like building with four floors set aside for residents. The rooms are semi-private accommodating two clients each with basic furnishings and a bathroom. There are also two communal showers on each floor. While undergoing detox, clients are housed on a separate floor with similar furnishings, but a more clinical environment. There are three hot meals provided each day cafeteria-style in a large dining hall.

Treatment and Staff

AdCare’s residential track in Worcester offers a medical detox and short term inpatient program. There are four physicians on staff who oversee the detox where clients are monitored by a medical staff around the clock. After this process (which typically lasts five to seven days), clients begin the residential portion of their treatment which takes another five to seven days. During this week, clients attend at least 20 group sessions which follow a CBT model and are led by LADCs. Clients also have access to individual therapy during the week.

AdCare is 12-step oriented and offers daily on-site AA meetings. It’s worth noting that AdCare’s client roll is quite large, with room for up to 114 at a time. This means group sessions usually top out at around 30 clients. While the facilities do employ on-staff psychiatrists, they do not offer dual diagnosis treatment.

AdCare clients typically transition to an IOP program after the initial two week period, either at the same Worchester facility or one of the six aforementioned New England locations. This program consists of day or evening sessions which are offered up to six days per week for three hours each and includes individual and group counseling, focused educational sessions, skills groups and self-help participation.

AdCare strongly encourages family involvement throughout the treatment process. For those choosing to continue their recovery at the Worchester location, there are therapy sessions available seven days a week. While their inpatient program is notably short, clients can attend IOP for as long as necessary.

Extras

Despite the short length of stay, clients still enjoy a range of amenities at AdCare. There is a basic gym in the building for use during free time. While there are no group trips, clients can socialize and enjoy activities like a Friday night pizza party or watching football on Sundays in the common area.

In Summary

As with many multi-facility recovery programs, AdCare’s strength lies in its wide range of locations and services offered. Additionally, clients can be confident they will find a convenient IOP that accommodates their schedule. The Worcester inpatient program offers short-term care in a hospital setting, with a focus on providing a medical detox and laying the groundwork of a 12-step based recovery.
