Founded by Cary Quashen, a man with 30 years of experience in working in the field of substance abuse treatment, Action Family Counseling opened in 1989. Today, Action Family Counseling offers residential treatment to adults in in Piru and Bakersfield, California and to adolescents in Santa Clarita. It also offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in of Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Ventura, Pasadena and Bakersfield. Action Family Counseling focuses on abstinence and the treatment of co-occurring disorders. It also offers on-site AA/NA meetings seven days a week and a strong focus on the 12-step model.
Accommodations and Food
In Piru, which is about 20 miles west of Santa Clarita, Action Family Counseling offers a two-story home with nine bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. The home offers large living areas and a tree-covered patio. It organizes outings to nearby beaches, walks and hikes to Lake Piru. Bakersfield offers all shared rooms while the number of clients varies between two and four, depending on the room. Each client has their own closet but share bathrooms. The Bakersfield property consists of three houses.
The Santa Clarita adolescent program is offers out of seven-bedroom Victorian style home that stands on a 19-acre property. The Ranch, as it is known, can house up to 21 clients and offers hiking, basketball, swimming and regular trips into downtown Santa Clarita for activities with a focus on re-socialization. All meals are provided and prepared for clients.
Treatment and Staff
Residential treatment at any Action Family Counseling property lasts 30 to 90 days. Days start at 6:30 am and lights out is at 10 pm. Five group sessions are offered per day while counseling and individual therapy are also available. Twenty-four hour crisis management, random toxicology screenings and medication management, as well as substance abuse education are further services provided. Clients regularly see off-site psychologists and a doctors as needed.
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is offered as either a half-day program that lasts four to six hours per day or full-day lasting six to eight hours a day for up to five days per week. It provides four hours of schooling, relapse prevention, cognitive restructuring, goal setting focus groups, individual, family and multifamily group therapy. AFC’s IOP provides education and process group, relapse prevention, spirituality group and individual therapy. Each week clients meet with a primary counselor and attend group three hours a day, three days a week.
Treatment for adolescents is offered on a co-ed basis to youth 12 to 17 years old. Focus is on psychiatric care, regular medical evaluations and weekly family and multi-family therapy groups. Daily recovery groups are run daily on relapse prevention, identifying behavioral triggers, as are 12-step study groups
Depending on the center, AFC offers clients the help of psychologists, doctors, Master’s-level therapists and LADCs and CADCs.

Action Family Counseling offers a mental health IOP in conjunction with the Good Samaritan Hospital.
