Action Family Counseling: Bakersfield Residential Review

Action Family Counseling (AFC) operates four Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) and three residential treatment programs in southern California. AFC was founded by Cary Quashen, who has been in recovery for over 35 years. Quashen currently serves as Executive Director of Henry May Newhall Memorial Hospital’s Behavioral Health Unit and has worked in the recovery industry for over 20 years.

AFC’s programs focus on addiction education and leading clients through the 12-step framework. Its Bakersfield residential program, also referred to as The Bakery, treats men and women and is equipped to provide treatment for co-occurring disorders. The Bakery’s campus is located in a suburban section of Bakersfield and contains three residences on a sprawling lawn.

Local clients in need of comprehensive outpatient treatment can attend the facility at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) level of care. Residential and PHP clients can continue treatment in AFC’s IOP, also in Bakersfield.

Accommodations and Food

Clients reside in one of three ranch-style residences on the grounds. Clients have two to four roommates, and the facility treats up to 35 residents at one time.

The home has common areas for TV and games, and clients can congregate on the ample grounds and patios. Personal electronics are generally not permitted, but clients may be permitted supervised phone and computer time if needed for work responsibilities. A house chef and kitchen staff prepare all meals according to clients’ preferences and nutritional needs.

Treatment and Staff

Residential treatment plans usually last 30 days, but extensions may be possible. Residents in need of detox are medically supervised for three to five days while they stabilize. They then enter treatment with highly-structured days of group therapy and psychoeducation classes. Individual therapy is scheduled at least once a week, as well. Clients usually participate in a total of five treatment groups each day.

The treatment team at The Bakery is described as “friendly but no-nonsense.” Groups are led by addiction counselors, primarily CSACs and CADCs, and the program is overseen by an MFT, who provides therapy for co-occurring disorders. The facility also works with a consulting psychiatrist for dual diagnosis support, including medication management.

The treatment team advocates abstinence and also uses harm reduction techniques. Counselors help clients improve their coping skills through DBT, CBT, solutions-focused therapy, trauma-informed care and work exploring family systems. Groups address topics such as early recovery issues, relapse prevention and creating boundaries. Clients also participate in experiential therapy groups such as music and art therapy and receive meditation and mindfulness training. Each evening, clients are transported to 12-step meetings in the community.

PHP clients attend groups and classes at the facility from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and are required to attend evening 12-step meetings as well.

Extras

Each Saturday the facility hosts a family group for addiction education and emotional support. On weekends, the staff takes clients out for recreational activities, which often include mountain hikes and trips to Kern County’s parks and cultural events. For aftercare, clients may enroll in AFC’s nearby Bakersfield IOP.

In Summary

Action Family Counseling has been providing reliable outpatient and residential treatment to the residents of southern California for over 30 years. Its Bakersfield residential program provides well-structured treatment in a pleasant and private home-like atmosphere. By encouraging family participation and offering on-going outpatient treatment, Action Family Counseling ensures that its clients have strong support systems to return to upon completing their residential program.
