For over 10 years, South Amboy Comprehensive Treatment Center has offered outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in South Amboy, New Jersey, roughly 20 miles south of Newark.
South Amboy CTC offers treatment plans using methadone and requires clients to attend group and individual therapy while in treatment. The clinic is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
After clients complete their initial intake session, they attend an orientation session to learn the policies and procedures of the clinic then meet with a counselor to discuss their treatment plan.
Treatment plans are divided into phases of recovery, each lasting a minimum of 90 days, depending on attendance and the results of drug screens. During the first three phases of treatment, clients must participate in group and/or individual therapy at least once a week. During phases four through six, they must participate in group or individual therapy at least once a month. Therapy uses CBT and groups are led by CADC and CADC-I counselors. The treatment team also includes physicians and nurses.
Groups address methadone education, the disease model of addiction and relapse prevention. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics.
Clients can apply for take-home doses after 90 days of successful treatment. South Amboy CTC hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
South Amboy Comprehensive Treatment Center offers a multi-phase methadone MAT program which includes comprehensive individual and group therapy. The treatment team provides individual attention, ensuring that each client receives the medication dose and therapy groups that give them the best chance at recovery success.
