Serenity House takes a holistic approach to substance abuse treatment; it’s philosophy “is based upon our understanding that the key to successful recovery is to help our patients experience physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness as they chart their path for a new life.”
While Serenity House has been in operation for over 10 years, it joined the Acadia provider network two years ago, an international group of mental and behavioral health facilities providing outpatient and residential treatment throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Accommodations and Food
Serenity House is situated on 40 wooded acres in the Sierra Foothills, with streams and walking trails throughout. Residents can have roommates or private rooms in the residence, which has a “clean” and “traditional” décor. The home features a modern kitchen and recreation room with a TV and areas for reading and creating art projects.
The facility’s garage has been converted into a fitness area, and a trainer comes to work out with clients twice a week. There is a kitchen staff to prepare all meals, though residents are encouraged to participate in the process. Since Serenity House only treats six residents at a time, meals are determined by clients’ preferences, restrictions and allergies. After an initial black-out phase of 14 days, clients can have limited cell phone use. Personal computers are not permitted.
Treatment and Staff
Clients in need of detox do so at an affiliated clinic nearby and are then transported to Serenity House. Upon arrival, clients have a full bio-psycho-social assessment. From there, the treatment team crafts an individualized plan that combines group and individual therapy, psycho-education classes, experiential therapy and peer support meetings such as AA/NA. Treatment plans range from 30 to 90 days.
Treatment follows the Matrix Model and uses CBT, Solutions Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and other evidence-based modalities to educate clients on handling triggers and relapse prevention. The treatment team, which includes CADCs and MFTs, can provide dual diagnosis support. Serenity House also transports clients with a mental health diagnosis to a psychiatrist for consultations and medication management.
A typical day at Serenity House begins with breakfast and a morning reflection group. The day continues with process groups and then lunch. After lunch, clients have additional process groups, classes and experiential programs such as art or equine therapy. Residents have dinner at 5 pm and then a final process group or peer support meeting. Clients are also transported to local community 12-step meetings and accommodations are made for those clients who wish to explore other peer support meetings—such as SMART Recovery.
Serenity House encourages family members to participate in recovery and offers a weekly family group on Thursdays, after which they may visit with their loved one.
Additionally, clients are set up with a strong continuing care plan before leaving treatment. It often refers clients to a nearby outpatient program, Therapeutic Solutions, and will help clients find therapists, outpatient programs and peer support meetings that meet their budget, recovery needs and location.
Serenity House offers discreet, holistic residential treatment in a comfortable, intimate setting. With only six clients in residence at any given time and a treatment team qualified to provide dual diagnosis support, Serenity House is equipped to develop long-term treatment plans that address each client’s history and recovery goals.
