RiverWoods Behavioral Health System offers inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment. Established in 2008, RiverWoods is in Riverdale, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. The hospital has a detox unit and outpatient substance abuse treatment at the Partial-Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. RiverWoods is a member of the Acadia provider network, an international group of mental and behavioral health facilities offering both outpatient and residential treatment throughout the US and the United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
Prospective clients have a full biopsychosocial assessment and are then admitted to detox (if necessary) followed by the PHP or IOP. Detox usually lasts three to seven days, during which time clients are encouraged to participate in 12-step meetings, group therapy and—if their health permits—recreational therapy.
PHP clients attend groups and psychoeducation classes from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. They also have individual therapy with a psychiatrist or therapist each week. Most clients complete their PHP treatment plans in two weeks. IOP clients also have individual therapy once a week. They attend group therapy from 8 am to 12 pm two or three days each week and most complete their IOP treatment plan in two to four weeks, often stepping down from the PHP. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings outside of treatment.
Groups use CBT, the 12-step framework and strength-based counseling to help clients learn coping skills and self-expression. The treatment team includes psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, MSWs and LPCs, all of whom are trained to provide comprehensive dual diagnosis support. Clients can also receive medication management for their mental health diagnosis.
Extras
RiverWoods encourages clients and their families to participate in family therapy. For aftercare, the RiverWoods treatment team helps clients find one-on-one counseling and sober support meetings such at AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery. The hospital also provides many mental health groups for older adults and serves mental health professionals in the area by providing periodic CEU classes in behavioral health treatment.
