Acadia: Red River Hospital Outpatient Review
Red River Hospital is located in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the Northcentral region of the state. Red River is an acute care psychiatric hospital that provides detox, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Its outpatient program, called Pathways, offers both a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Red River recently joined the Acadia provider network, an international mental and behavioral health group which operates a number of outpatient and residential treatment facilities throughout the United State and United Kingdom. However, the facility has been in operation and serving the residents of Texas and Oklahoma for over 40 years.
Treatment and Staff
PHP clients attend group therapy for six hours a day, Monday through Friday. Most clients complete their PHP treatment plan in two to three weeks and then step down to treatment in the IOP. IOP clients attend group therapy three to four hours a day, three days each week. Most clients complete their IOP treatment plan in two to four weeks. Clients have individual therapy as-needed.
Outpatient treatment has two tracks: substance abuse and dual diagnosis support. Therapy at Red River uses CBT, DBT, family systems and the 12-step framework. Groups focus on helping clients manage triggers, build healthy boundaries and understand the disease of addiction. Clients enrolled in the dual diagnosis track receive comprehensive therapy for their mental health diagnoses, and those in need will meet with a psychiatrist and/or psychiatric nurse practitioner for medication management.
The treatment team also includes Master’s-level therapists—such as LPCs and LSCWs—and case managers. It encourages participation in 12-step meetings outside of treatment hours, such as AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery.

Clients can request family therapy, and Red River is in the process of building an Alumni Program to create more on-going support for its clients.
Red River also has a dedicated unit for active-duty military personnel, the Military Heroes Unit. The MHU treats mental health and substance abuse and employs therapies to combat PTSD such as Cognitive Processing Treatment (CPT), rigorous exercise and equine therapy. It also has a unit dedicated to geriatric care.
