Acadia NorthwestAcadia Northwest Review

Acadia Northwest was founded in 2005 in Portland, Oregon. It provides Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment, including a specialized IOP track for those who want to stop using methamphetamine, and a variety of other recovery services. There are two locations in the Portland area to serve as many individuals and families as possible.

Acadia Northwest has a large network of partners within the State of Oregon. It routinely works with local corrections agencies to treat drug offenders and have a cooperative relationship with a physician who prescribes and monitors medication for clients, if needed. It also works closely with several sober living houses in the Portland area and provides referrals for those who have been displaced due to addiction, recently completed residential treatment or just need a stable environment during early recovery. It is committed to treating each client as an individual and addressing all aspects of recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment length at Acadia Northwest varies per client. Prior to admission, a baseline urine drug screening, as well as an in-person comprehensive assessment with a counselor, is completed. While on-site detox services are not provided, referrals are made to appropriate medical facilities. Clients receive individualized treatment plans.

Weekly IOP treatment includes an hour of individual therapy, three hours of group therapy and a one-hour relapse prevention education class. Dual diagnosis support is offered during individual therapy. During group treatment, counselors combine evidence-based methods, specifically DBT and CBT, with traditional talk therapy. Groups are usually kept small, between five and 11 clients, in keeping with their mission of providing an intimate, nurturing environment.

Most groups are coed, but Acadia Northwest offers a weekly female-only group therapy session so women can feel comfortable talking about issues they may not want to share with men. They also have a specialty IOP group for clients suffering from methamphetamine addiction. These clients are also treated by a physician who can oversee a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), if the client chooses. While attendance is not mandatory, two AA meetings are offered at the facility, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Acadia Northwest staff includes six CADCs and support staff. The client-to-staff ratio varies from 1:1 to 2:1. Director Roger Kirby is so passionate about helping addicts, he offers Skype counseling to those who can’t make it to sessions in person. He is also a trained interventionist and consults with treatment providers in other states on interventions.

Extras

Aftercare and local recovery support group referrals are provided. The rehab has access to sober living houses for clients who need more comprehensive treatment while in IOP, as well as for those who have completed inpatient treatment services. Acadia Northwest provides anger management counseling and education, DUI education and therapy, drug and alcohol testing, and an advanced recovery series, Life Management Solutions, for those who have some time under their belt. Family and couples counseling services are also offered.

Acadia Northwest trains college interns, offers community lectures on chemical dependency, and provides corporate training that teaches employers about detecting substance abuse in the workplace and strategies for dealing with addiction situations. Intervention services are provided for families and employers. In addition, Acadia Northwest holds a Back to Work conference for employers who provide Employer Assistance programs (EAPs) that offer substance abuse treatment services to their employees.

In Summary

While this is an outpatient facility, all recovery bases are covered at very affordable prices. If a client can’t find services at Acadia Northwest, staff will go above and beyond to help find what they need elsewhere in the local recovery community. With everything from assessments and IOP to interventions, Acadia Northwest works hard to make sure that each client receives individualized attention and care.
