Since 2010, Mountain Health Solutions Comprehensive Treatment Center has offered outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts using methadone, Subutex and Suboxone. It also requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.
MHS is located in North Wilkesboro, a small town in Northwest North Carolina often called “The Key to The Blue Ridge Mountains.” The clinic is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
After they’re assessed, clients and the treatment team decide which course of MAT best suits their needs—methadone, Suboxone or Subutex. After attending orientation sessions to learn about the program, clients then must attend group therapy at least once a month and individual therapy at least twice a month.
The treatment team at MHS includes physicians, nurses and CSAC addiction counselors. Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and groups explore handling triggers, relapse prevention and the disease model of addiction. Gender-specific groups for men and women are also available.
Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to nearby mental health clinics for dual diagnosis support. They are also encouraged to seek out peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous or NA, if they think it would be beneficial, and MHS can help them locate meetings in the area.
After 90 days of successful treatment—including clean drug screens—clients can apply for take-home doses of their medication. MHS hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
MHS offers a parenting skills group and a group for pregnant clients. There is also a weekly Road to Recovery group for clients at high-risk of relapse.
Mountain Health Solutions Comprehensive Treatment Center provides MAT to opioid addicts in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of North Carolina. With three medication options, parenting and pregnancy groups as well as resources for clients especially vulnerable to relapse, Mountain Health Solutions is committed to creating treatment that responds to the needs of its community.
