Millcreek of Magee Treatment Center of Magee, Mississippi—a small town southeast of Jackson—is a behavioral health facility for adolescents. It operates through the Acadia Healthcare network, which has care centers across the US. Millcreek offers several different services including residential care for young people dealing with psychiatric disorders, treatment for adolescents with intellectual disabilities, group homes, community based programs, and a therapeutic day school. The residential program treats a variety of mental health issues and offers an array of programming options.
Accommodations and Food
The residential section of the facility is divided into four separate buildings that hold the housing units. Each of the units can accommodate up to 15 clients. The units are situated around the core nurses station. Clients stay in rooms that are cheerfully decorated with plenty of natural light, and sleep in twin beds. There are dressers and wardrobes that clients share.
The therapeutic campus sits on 23 acres that contains the main treatment building with the kitchen and dining hall, additional housing units, the Millcreek school and large gymnasium.
The residential clients eat three meals a day in the dining hall. The food is made on site by kitchen staff.
Treatment and Staff
The residential level of care is for clients who are between the ages of six and 21. Every client has an assessment at the beginning of treatment that results in an individualized treatment plan. Treatment consists of at least one individual session per week, and a minimum of three group sessions a week. The group sessions cover anger management, coping skills, independent living skills, trauma related issues, and developing new coping skills.
Monday through Friday clients attend classes from 9 am to 3 pm. The classes are divided by grade level and are kept small in number of ensure personal attention.
The residential program is on a phase system. This entails clients to gain certain privileges as they move through their program by earning points. The phases are referred to as exploration, knowledge, motivation and achievement.
CBT is the primary treatment approach. Other commonly used protocols include DBT, trauma-informed care and therapeutic journaling. Medication management is provided per each client’s individualized plan.
Staff includes medical doctors, psychiatric nurses, LCSWs, dietitians, LPNs, LPCs and psychiatrists.
Extras
There are several experiential therapy and extracurricular activities throughout treatment. This includes a walking club, art and music therapy, a fitness club, book club and access to the on-site gym.
There are two family therapy sessions scheduled into each client’s schedule every week.
