Millcreek of Magee Intellectual Disability Program Review

Acadia’s Millcreek of Magee offers a variety of treatment programs for young people with behavioral or mental illness issues. Amongst their roster of treatment options, there is a residential track for individuals struggling with intellectual disabilities. This program is for clients between the ages of six and 21 at the intermediate care facility. This is the only private program of its kind in the state of Mississippi that caters specifically to clients with special needs. The facility is located in its namesake, Magee, Mississippi, a southeastern suburb of Jackson.

Accommodations and Food

The intermediate care facility that houses the participating clients in this program provides 125 beds in total. Clients reside on the main campus in a home-like facility. There are semi-private bedrooms that are furnished with twin beds and dressers. The rooms are cheery and colorful, and offer spacious accommodations.

The campus contains a gymnasium with basketball court, outdoor seating areas, and a play area. There is a shared living room space with a TV.

Clients dine three times a day together in the cafeteria. The meals are prepared daily by kitchen staff. The menus, which offer a couple of different options and are able to accommodate specific dietary restrictions, are designed by a dietitian.

Treatment and Staff

The intellectual disability program can be accessed either by referral from an outside agency, caregiver, or medical professional, or through personal inquiry. The intellectual disability track focuses on providing clients with interventions that will strengthen their skills and aid them in overcoming common challenges.

Every client has an individualized treatment track that emphasizes and encourages their strengths while sharpening their skill sets. Clients are in school on campus from 9 am to 3 pm every day. While in school they are receiving the age appropriate education while also getting enhanced skills training and therapy.

Other elements of this track include speech therapy, physical therapy, and recreation therapy. Treatment does not end in the classroom. Clients receive continued support while in the residence as well. This is in the form of daily living skills and an emphasis on community reintegration.

Treatment approaches utilize evidence-based methods and task oriented approaches. There is also medication management and experiential activities folded into program plans.

This level of care is overseen by board certified psychiatrists who specialize in child and adolescent issues. There are also occupational therapists, recreational therapists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and family doctors on staff.

In Summary

The intellectual disability program at Millcreek of Magee provides compassionate and caring treatment for young people who have dealt with a number of challenges throughout their lives. The environment is positive and encouraging while teaching the clients a number of valuable skills. The facility is safe and caring and the programs are operated by experienced, compassionate clinicians.
