McCallum Place: Extended PHP Review
Kansas City’s McCallum Place is part of the Acadia Healthcare network. It’s an eating disorder clinic with several levels of treatment options. This includes an intensive residential program, and outpatient tracks, such as the extended Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). McCallum Place offers this program to both adults and adolescents struggling with a variety of eating disorders. The track includes group therapy, individual therapy, and supported meal sessions. Treatment utilizes evidence-based approaches in a very structured environment.
Treatment and Staff
What makes the extended PHP a bit different than the standard PHP at McCallum Place is that is can include up to 70 hours per week of treatment. This breaks down to up to 10 hours per day of the program over seven days.
They treat adolescents in this program in a separate therapy suite in the hospital. This wing contains an art therapy room, dining room, and full kitchen. The adult side also has a dining room and kitchen, along with a recreation room and yoga area.
The days typically begin with a weigh in and vitals check, followed by a morning snack that the treatment team monitors and supports. Each client receives a customized treatment plan that includes individual therapy up to three times a week, and several group sessions. Each participant joins a “home group” that is made up of clients who are dealing with similar eating disorders, like anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and over exercising.
Other groups include art therapy, relapse prevention, body image, psychodrama, managing emotions, sexuality and goals. Twice a week clients meet with the dietitian to discuss their progress and work on creating a goal plan. Other events that extended PHP clients attend include movement classes, yoga and other recreational activities, assuming that the client is stable enough to exercise.
In addition to the therapeutic experiences, individuals in this program can also anticipate regular meals throughout the day. These meals are in a group setting, and afterward clients discuss how they are feeling with the therapists.
Staff at McCallum Place includes LPCs, dietitians, psychiatrists, medical doctors and nursing staff.
Extras
There are weekly family support groups at the facility Mondays at 4:30 pm. There are also monthly family days that include therapy and group activities with the staff and clients.
