McCallum Place Adolescent Inpatient Review

Part of the Acadia Healthcare network, McCallum Place is an eating disorder treatment organization with locations in St. Louis, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. It offers both inpatient and outpatient services for adolescents and adults. The adolescent track is for young people who struggle with body image issues and eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, over exercising and binge eating disorder. Medical director and board certified psychiatrist Dr. Kimberli McCallum started the program. Above all, it aims to provide comprehensive, evidence-based eating disorder treatment services.

Accommodations and Food

The inpatient care for the Kansas location is in a medical facility, though the living quarters are very comfortable and home-like. The adolescent program accommodates up to 11 clients, who reside in private bedrooms in a separate wing in the hospital. The rooms are fully furnished with twin beds, small dressers and nightstands. Residents enjoy common areas for the young clients that offer entertainment, including a TV, books and games.

There are exercise areas throughout campus, including a yoga room and fitness center. Clients may have their cell phones and tablets while in treatment, but on a limited basis.

The meals are all supervised and supported. A kitchen staff prepares food but clients also learn how to make their own healthy meals. A staff dietitian designs the balanced, nutritious menus.

Treatment and Staff

It’s worth mentioning, the adolescent program factors in 13 hours of schooling every week so young clients don’t fall behind in their studies. There are three scheduled individual sessions every week, at least one exam with a medical doctor, one meeting with the dietitian, and weekly sessions with the staff psychiatrist.

Clients attend several groups during the week. The 11 adolescents in the residential program have groups that include dance therapy, body image, coping skills, negative self talk, and nutrition. Programming uses evidence-based approaches like CBT, Family Systems, and DBT, and include expressive arts therapies like music therapy, art therapy, psychodrama, recreation and experiential modalities.

The multidisciplinary staff of the adolescent eating disorder program meets weekly to discuss clients and treatment plans. Staff consists of child and adolescent psychiatrists, LPC, NCC, registered dietitians, music and dance therapists, and strength and conditioning coaches.

Extras

The treatment team includes family members throughout the process of client’s treatment. They also have access to support through counseling.

This program uses canines as a therapeutic tool with animal assisted therapy.

In Summary

The adolescent inpatient program at McCallum Place is incredibly sensitive to the ever changing needs of young clients. As a result, it provides support and treatment solutions that are geared toward setting the foundation for long-term recovery. The protocols and customized treatment plans are comforting for both the resident and their loved ones, while also offering solution focused approaches.
