Acadia: Harbor Oaks Hospital Review
For nearly 10 years, Harbor Oaks Hospital has been providing residential and outpatient treatment to residents of Southeastern Michigan. Harbor Oaks is located in New Baltimore, a small town 40 miles north of Detroit on Lake St. Clair. Harbor Oaks is dually-licensed to treat adults and adolescents for mental health disorders as well as substance abuse. It also has a detox unit in which residents may spend 5-10 days prior to entering residential treatment.
Harbor Oaks is a member of the Acadia provider network, which operates a number of treatment facilities throughout the United State and United Kingdom.
Accommodations and Food
Clients are housed in the hospital which features a modern, colorful décor that makes a home-like and pleasant atmosphere. Residents have one roommate and take meals and snacks in the cafeteria, which is happy to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences.
The facility features a TV room, a fitness center and a recreational therapy room where clients can partake in games and art activities. Cell phones and personal computers are not permitted, but clients can use the unit phone to make and receive calls home. Harbor Oaks provides a laundry room and supplies to residents free of charge.
Treatment and Staff
Most clients complete their treatment plan in 30 days, which usually includes their time in detox.
Residents begin each day with reflection time and have breakfast at 8 am. They then participate in a full day of group therapy and psychoeducation classes. Clients also have individual therapy at least once a week. Evenings are spent doing recreational activities, treatment homework and attending on-site 12-step meetings. The day finishes after a 9 pm snack.
The treatment team includes physicians, nurses and Master’s-level therapists such as LPCs, psychologists and MSWs. Clinicians are highly-experienced in treating co-occurring disorders and are able to provide medication management for mental health diagnoses. Therapy at Harbor Oaks uses Motivational Interviewing (MI), the 12-step framework, DBT and Hazelden’s CBT-based treatment curriculum. Clients also have experiential therapy each week, including art therapy.
Extras
Harbor Oaks provides family education and support groups each Saturday and Sunday. After attending groups, families can visit residents. Family therapy is also available if families wish to take an active part in the recovery process.
Harbor Oaks’ treatment team wants to make sure clients have the support they need to continue their recovery after leaving inpatient treatment. It works with each client to create an aftercare plan which may include outpatient treatment, peer support meetings and/or individual counseling.
