For over ten years, Discovery House Woonsocket has provided outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Woonsocket is a mid-sized city, located just south of the Massachusetts border and 15 miles north of Providence. DWH is located near the Walnut Hill Shopping Center and offers treatment plans using methadone. It requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.
Under the Acadia Healthcare umbrella, Discovery House facilities are included among an expansive international group of behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with inpatient, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.
Treatment and Staff
Discovery House, a national chain of MAT facilities, offers a holistic approach to the treatment of opioid addiction, helping clients improve all aspects of their lives so that they are less vulnerable to addiction. Discovery House Woonsocket’s individual and group therapy helps clients overcome and manage their disease while living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Additionally, clients work to establish a stable and safe home environment and a purpose-filled life with meaningful daily activities (such as work, school, volunteer work, family relationships and creative endeavors) that foster independence and self-sufficiency. The concept of community is also cultivated, and clients are guided through the steps of developing healthy relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.
By state law, clients must attend group or individual therapy at least once a month while in their first year of MAT. However, DHW encourages clients to attend weekly group therapy throughout the first year and to continue to avail themselves of group and individual therapy thereafter.
Therapy uses CBT to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers and explore other recovery issues such as the disease of addiction. Group and individual therapy is led by LADCs. The treatment team also includes physicians and nurses. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and DHW helps clients locate NA meetings that work for their location and schedule.
Clients are eligible to apply to receive at least one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days.
DHW hopes that its clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
Discovery House prides itself on helping each client meet their individual needs. To that end, counselors spend significant time with each client creating customized aftercare and helping them locate primary care and mental health services.
Discovery House Woonsocket has been providing residents of Woonsocket, Rhode Island with MAT for opioid addiction for over a decade. Its counselors are committed to making sure each client is receiving all the evidence-based mental health care and supportive services they need in order to create a stable and productive life in recovery.
