Waterville MaineAcadia: Discovery House Waterville Review

For nearly 20 years, Discovery House Waterville has provided outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts. It currently offers treatment plans using methadone and Suboxone and it requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication.

DHW is located in Waterville, Maine, a small city home to Colby College and Thomas College.

The clinic is situated off the I-95, near the Robert LaFleur Airport. DHW is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom. Discovery House also operates MAT clinics in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Utah.

Treatment and Staff

Discovery House, a national chain of MAT facilities, offers a holistic approach to the treatment of opioid addiction, helping clients improve all aspects of their lives so that they are less vulnerable to addiction. Discovery House Taylorsville’s individual and group therapy helps clients overcome and manage their disease while living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Additionally, clients work to establish a stable and safe home environment and a purpose-filled life with meaningful daily activities (such as work, school, volunteer work, family relationships and creative endeavors) that foster independence and self-sufficiency. The concept of community is also cultivated, and clients are guided through the steps of developing healthy relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.

During their assessment, clients and the treatment team decide which medication best suits their need: methadone or Suboxone. During their first year of treatment, clients must attend group therapy at least twice a month. During their second year of treatment, clients must attend group therapy at least once a month. After their second year, group therapy is optional. Clients must also have individual therapy at least once a quarter in their initial stage of treatment. During that time, their primary counselor decides how frequently the client should return for individual therapy.

Group therapy uses CBT to help clients handle triggers and develop coping skills. Group topics include relapse prevention, recovery issues and a women’s issues group periodically.

The treatment team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, LADCs and CADCs. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy and an on-site LPN provides some mental health support, but clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support are referred to nearby mental health clinics. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and DHW hosts a weekly on-site Celebrate Recovery group. DHW also helps clients locate NA meetings nearby.

Clients are eligible to apply to receive one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days. After that, they can continue to apply for more take-home doses every three months.

DHW hopes that its clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.

Extras

DHW prides itself on helping each client meet their individual needs. To that end, counselors spend time with each client creating an aftercare plan. DHW also hosts a monthly parenting class available to all its clients.
