Since 1994, Discovery House South Portland has provided outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts. It currently offers both a Methadone Maintenance program and a Suboxone Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that require clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.
Under the Acadia Healthcare umbrella, Discovery House MAT facilities are included among an expansive international group of behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with inpatient, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.
Treatment and Staff
Discovery House, a national chain of MAT facilities, provides a holistic approach to the treatment of opioid addiction, helping clients improve all aspects of their lives so that they are less vulnerable to addiction. Discovery House South Portland’s required attendance of individual and group therapy helps clients overcome and manage their disease while living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Additionally, clients work to establish a stable and safe home environment and a purpose-filled life with meaningful daily activities (such as work, school, volunteer work, family relationships and creative endeavors) that foster independence and self-sufficiency. The concept of community is also cultivated, and clients are guided through the steps of developing healthy relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.
During their assessment, clients and the DHSP treatment team decide for which program they’re best-suited: Methadone Maintenance or the Suboxone IOP. Methadone Maintenance clients must attend a series of orientation groups when entering treatment which include HIV prevention and addiction education. After their orientation groups, clients must attend group or individual therapy at least once a month, though they’re encouraged to attend more often.
Clients who choose to receive Suboxone for MAT must enroll in the Suboxone IOP which includes group therapy three times a week for a minimum of six weeks. After the initial six weeks, an on-going therapy schedule is customized for the client, depending on their needs and schedule.
Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers. The treatment team includes physicians, nurse practitioners and LADCs. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health facilities. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and DHSP helps clients locate NA meetings nearby.
Clients are eligible to apply to receive one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days. After that, they can continue to apply for more take-home doses every three to six months.
DHSP hopes that its clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
In an effort to help each client meet their individual needs, DHSP counselors spend time with each client creating an aftercare plan.
