Discovery House Salt Lake City’s individual and group therapy helps clients overcome and manage their disease while living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Additionally, clients work to establish a stable and safe home environment and a purpose-filled life with meaningful daily activities (such as work, school, volunteer work, family relationships and creative endeavors) that foster independence and self-sufficiency. The concept of community is also cultivated, and clients are guided through the steps of developing healthy relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.
During their assessment, clients and Discovery House’s treatment team decide which course of MAT they’re best-suited for: methadone or Suboxone. Clients must attend group or individual therapy at least once each week for the first 90 days of treatment. After 90 days, they must attend group or individual therapy at least twice a month for the next six months. After nine months in treatment, they must attend group or individual therapy once a month.
Clients are eligible to apply for one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days. After 120 days, they can apply for two and after 180 days, three take-homes may be permitted.
Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers and other recovery issues. Group and individual therapy is led by addiction counselors with Utah’s SUDC credential. The treatment team also includes physicians and nurses and it has two CMHC therapists.
Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to mental health clinics. It has an affiliation with one nearby that is equipped to treat clients using methadone. Clients are encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and Discovery House helps clients locate NA meetings that work for their location and schedule.
Discovery House hopes that its clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.

Discovery House hosts a weekly family group on Wednesday nights for support and addiction education.
Counselors also spend significant time with each client creating customized aftercare plans. It also offers substance abuse individual and group therapy a la carte to clients not enrolled in the MAT programs and is a provider of Prime for Life, Utah’s DUI class program.
