Layton UtahAcadia: Discovery House Layton Review

For nearly 10 years, Discovery House Layton has provided Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in Layton, Utah. Layton is a mid-sized city in Northern Utah, 15 miles south of Ogden. Discovery House offers treatment plans using methadone, Suboxone or Subutex and requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.

Discovery House Layton is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.

Treatment and Staff

Discovery House offers a holistic approach to MAT, helping clients improve all aspects of their lives so that they are less vulnerable to addiction. Discovery House’s individual and group therapy helps clients address four main aspects of recovery: health, home, purpose and community. By addressing health issues, staff help clients overcome and/or manage their disease as well as living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Therapeutic sessions also discuss how clients can develop a stable and safe home life. By cultivating meaningful daily activities—such as job, school, volunteering, family care-taking or creative endeavors—clients develop a sense of purpose and independence. Additionally, relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope are integral to lasting recovery.

During their assessment, clients and Discovery House’s treatment team decide which course of MAT best suits their needs: methadone, Suboxone or Subutex. Clients must attend group or individual therapy at least once each week for the first 90 days of treatment. After 90 days, they must attend group or individual therapy at least twice a month. Clients are eligible to apply to receive one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days.

Therapy uses CBT to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers and other recovery issues. Group and individual therapy is led by addiction counselors with Utah’s SUDC credential. The treatment team also includes physicians and nurses. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and Discovery House helps clients locate NA meetings that work for their location and schedule.

Discovery House hopes that its clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.

Extras

Discovery House prides itself on helping each client meet their individual needs. To that end, counselors spend significant time with each client creating customized aftercare plans and connecting them to community agencies and services to help with employment, housing and medical care. The treatment team meets weekly to discuss the progress of each client.

With its holistic approach combined with group and individual therapy requirement using evidence-based methods of treatment and desire to connect clients to additional services to aid in their health and stability, Discovery House Layton creates a sense of community and connection for those committing to recovery.
